The Blueprint (Role Profile)

Apex Tool Group is seeking a skilled and motivated Service/Build Technician to join our team in Auburn Hills, Michigan. This role involves assembling, testing, troubleshooting, and servicing complex electromechanical automation equipment used in automotive manufacturing. The ideal candidate will have a strong mechanical and electrical aptitude, experience with automation systems, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.

The Build (Responsibilities)

System Build & Assembly:



  • Assemble mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic components for automated assembly systems used in automotive manufacturing.
  • Install wiring, control panels, sensors, actuators, and other automation components.
  • Calibrate and align machines, fixtures, and tooling to ensure accurate operation.


Testing & Debugging:



  • Perform machine testing and assist in initial debug and troubleshooting.
  • Support the commissioning of systems, including software/hardware integration and process verification.
  • Identify and report design or manufacturing issues to engineering.


Service & Support:



  • Provide on-site service, repair, and preventive maintenance to customers for installed automated systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical and electrical failures in the field.
  • Train customers on equipment operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.


Documentation & Communication:



  • Maintain accurate service logs, assembly records, and documentation of issues and fixes.
  • Communicate with engineering and project management teams to relay field feedback and suggest improvements.
  • Follow safety protocols and company policies at all times.

The Toolbox (Qualifications)

Education & Experience:



  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field preferred.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in automation assembly, machine building, or field service.


Technical Skills:



  • Strong understanding of mechanical assembly and electrical wiring (including schematics and blueprints).
  • Familiarity with PLCs, HMIs, sensors, servo systems, and pneumatic components.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic instruments.


Other Requirements:



  • Ability to travel up to 30-50% for customer support (domestic and occasional international).
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
