Job Description Summary

The Lab Safety Manager is responsible for the strategic leadership, development, and management of laboratory safety programs across the university. This position ensures compliance with all relevant regulations, fosters a culture of safety, and serves as the primary resource for laboratory safety guidance, training, and incident response.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

    • Lead the laboratory safety program, including policy development, implementation, and continuous improvement.

    • Develop and deliver laboratory safety training and outreach.

    • Conduct and oversee laboratory inspections, risk assessments, and audits.

    • Investigate laboratory incidents and coordinate corrective actions.

    • Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies and internal stakeholders on laboratory safety matters.

    • Monitor and report on laboratory safety performance metrics.

    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of laboratory safety regulations and best practices.

    • Serve as Chemical Hygiene Officer and Biosafety Officer: develop, implement, update Chemical Hygiene Plan and biosafety protocols; review SOPs for particularly hazardous substances.

    • Oversee chemical inventory, SDS management, and disposal of chemical, biological, radioactive, and mixed hazardous wastes in compliance with EPA/RCRA/NRC.

    • Conduct industrial hygiene monitoring (e.g., air sampling, fume hood certification, compressed gas inspections) and advise on corrective measures.

    • Chair or serve on the Laboratory Safety Committee and interface with campus-wide EHS, research, biosafety, animal care, and environmental committees.

    • Provide risk assessments and technical support for novel research protocols; consult on lab design, renovations, ventilation, and equipment selection.

    • Other duties as assigned by the Director.

    Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

    • Bachelor's degree plus 5 years related experience in the application of Environmental Health and Safety regulations in Higher Education or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    • Extensive knowledge of applicable environmental and safety regulations and guidelines established by Federal, State, and Local Governing Authorities such as EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), DOT (Department of Transportation), North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, OSHA (Occupational Health and Safety Administration), NIH (National Institutes of Health), and ANSI (American National Standards Institute).

    • Knowledge of the NIH Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) and ability to manage the Institutional Biosafety Committee and participate on the Institutional Review Board.

    • Ability to effectively manage sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.

    • Ability to practice effective communication skills, both orally and in writing, with internal and external customers. Ability to handle conflicting situations as they arise.

    • Expertise in computer skills and relevant software including Microsoft Office, Google Suite and experience with Environmental Management Systems.

    • Must be detail oriented.

    Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

    • Master's degree in policy, environmental science, or occupational safety is preferred.

    • Professional certifications, such as CHMM or CSP, are highly desirable.

    • Experience in Laboratory Safety, Chemical Safety and Biosafety, BSL-1 and BSL-2 laboratories.

    • Demonstrate ability in spill prevention, respiratory protection, air monitoring equipment, and spill response equipment.
