IT Systems Technician

Definition

Under general direction from the IT Infrastructure Division Manager and coordination with the IT Systems Supervisor, performs server, workstation, and network preventive maintenance; assists in automating system processes to the fullest extent possible; reviews system logs; performs related duties as required. Additionally, incumbents in this position will serve as backup for other duties within the Infrastructure Division.

Organization: Reports to the IT Infrastructure Division Manager in the Innovation & Technology Department.

Position Snapshot/A Day in the Life: As an entry-level member of the Infrastructure Division, the IT Systems Technician plays a critical support role in the City's technology environment. A typical day includes responding to Tier 1 and Tier 2 support tickets escalated from the IT Service Desk, covering issues related to network connectivity, user access, network hardware troubleshooting, and system availability. The technician works closely with senior Infrastructure staff to assist with tasks such as network equipment configuration and deployments, patch management, server maintenance, and documentation. The technician is expected to learn quickly, maintain detailed records, and contribute to the team's overall stability and performance of critical IT.

Essential Functions

The incumbent must have the ability to:

  • Provide first level support for trouble tickets escalated to the Infrastructure team.
  • Assist with enterprise backups.
  • Assist in troubleshooting server operating systems and hardware.
  • Assist in troubleshooting network connectivity and performance issues.
  • Patch servers and workstations via automated patch management solutions.
  • Assist in monitoring and maintaining Microsoft Active Directory and Entra ID.
  • Monitor and audit system logs, working with IT staff to resolve issues.
  • Apply router, switch, and firewall updates under the direction of the IT Manager.
  • Troubleshoot systems and applications to identify and correct malfunctions and other operational problems.
  • Monitor and tune system performance.
  • Assist with patching, create maintenance routines, backing up, and troubleshooting all databases and database servers.
  • Maintain records and prepare and submit reports and correspondence as required by immediate supervisor.
  • Work overtime and off-shift hours as needed.
  • Provide backup for core functions of the Infrastructure Division.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Position requires frequent standing and walking, sitting for extended periods; normal manual dexterity and eye/hand coordination; lift and move objects weighing up to twenty-five pounds; corrected hearing and vision to normal range as well as verbal communication; use of office equipment including telephone, computer, calculator, copiers and fax. Work is normally performed in an office with moderate to constant noise; frequent contact with other staff and vendors is required.

Experience and Training Guidelines

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A minimum of two (2) years working experience in systems administration in a Windows server environment OR a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Computer Information Systems or a closely related field and a minimum of one (1) year applicable experience. Experience with Microsoft Exchange, Windows Server OS, and Cisco networking equipment is required. Experience managing multiple, interrelated servers in a 24 x 7 environment is highly desirable. Experience with Dell hardware, *nix, and Rubrik is desirable as well as Microsoft server certifications. Additionally, enterprise level security, disaster recovery, and business contingency planning experience or certifications are also desirable. Experience may be substituted for certification at the discretion of the Department Director.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Municipal government environment.
  • Experience with VMware hosts and guests using vCenter.
  • Experience with Cisco routers and Ethernet switches.
  • Use and management of patch management systems.
  • Experience with backups using an enterprise backup solution.
  • Managing multiple, interrelated servers in a 24 x 7 environment.
  • Dell hardware, *nix, Mitel MiVoice Business solutions, and Rubrik data protection solutions.
  • Microsoft server certifications.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES: Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, Microsoft Certified Professional, Cisco CCNA. Possession of, and continuously throughout employment, a valid CA Class "C" Driver's License.

Preferred Certifications:
  • CompTIA Security+
  • CompTIA Network+
  • Microsoft Server or Cloud-related certifications

Supplemental Information

Successful candidates will be required to pass a fingerprint screening and an abbreviated background investigation conducted by the Fontana Police Department.
