Met Lab Machinist II Primary Duties
- Perform the machining of test specimens, NDT reference standards and parts.
- Program, set up and operate CNC and other lathes to prepare finished test specimens.
- Set up and operate cylindrical grinders to produce low stress ground test specimens
- Machine blank samples into reference standards according to supplied blueprints or drawings and document all information on appropriate forms.
- Calibrate the movements on CNC and manual vertical milling machine and electric discharge machine, the surface roughness indicators, and the micrometer sets.
- Daily simple maintenance and cleaning of assigned equipment.
- Inform supervision of all safety and quality concerns as needed.
- Makes recommendations to improve processes in the department.
- Understands all backlogs, what they mean and their impact.
- Identify highest priority work and adjust work schedule accordingly.
- Performs all other duties and special projects as assigned.
Required for the Met Lab Machinist II
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- 2+ years of relevant experience.
Preferred for the Met Lab Machinist II
- Journeyman Machinist papers preferred OR will considered candidates who are willing to enroll in the program after being hired.
- Ability to operate all equipment in the department without supervision.
- Experience with department machines including, but not limited to CNC machines including (Okuma, Hurco, Hitachi), Kellenberger cylindrical grinder, CNC and manual milling machines and lathes.
- Understanding of testing procedures and guidelines.
- Knowledge of CNC programming.
- Ability to make changes to CNC programs, machine special fixtures and adapters.
- Knowledge of shop mathematics, machinability of materials, and layout techniques.
- Working knowledge of reference calibration standards and electrodes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and problem-solving skills.
- Team oriented, positive attitude and ability to work well with others.
- Ability to organize and prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and ever changing work environment.
