About the Position

Are you an experienced Medical Assistant? Fantastic! The Tuberculosis Services division of Public Health is seeking an enthusiastic Medical Assistant to join our team!

As our Medical Assistant, you will play an important role in fulfilling our mission to prevent the spread of communicable diseases through education, prevention, and treatment. Our team provides high-quality health care and exceptional customer service through direct patient care, support services, and surveillance activities.

Position Qualifications

Education



  • High school diploma or GED
  • Medical Assistant Certificate of Completion from an accredited health care training program


Other Requirements



  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a CPR and First Aid Certification by the time of hire
  • Must complete the OSHA/Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure and Defensive Driving training within three months of hire
  • Within one month of hire, all employees are required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test


Our Preferred Candidate has



  • Two or more years of experience as a Medical Assistant
  • Experience performing venipuncture and administering injections or vaccines
  • Experience using electronic medical records
  • Phlebotomy certification
  • Basic Life Support Certification
  • Public Health or Community Health Worker certification from an accredited college or currently enrolled in a Public Health or Community Health Worker program and eligible to receive a certification within six months of hire
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English


Essential Job Tasks

The tasks listed are a representation and not an all-inclusive list of essential job tasks for this position.



  • Provides direct patient care, including patient data collection, specimen collection, communicable disease education
  • Provides Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) and Directly Observed Preventive Therapy (DOPT) medications to patients through video, telehealth, or delivers medication to patients home, job, school, etc., and notifies the medical personnel of any patient complaints or problems
  • Collects specimens such as blood, urine, sputum, etc., from patients receiving care from one or more of the clinical programs of the division
  • Documents patient and family encounters in the prescribed medical records or encounter/reporting form
  • Performs certain medical procedures (i.e., tuberculin skin testing, etc.) under the direction of the medical director of the division
  • Gathers patient demographics and medical information to be used by the physician to determine the individual's prescribed treatment regimen
  • Assists medical personnel in the clinic with collecting specimens as ordered and prepping patients for the physician to examine
  • Participates in teaching and educating patients and families about communicable or chronic medical conditions affecting their health
  • Tracks and locates patients or contacts throughout who suffer from or were exposed to a communicable disease
