Applic Analyst, Acad Tech

Davidson College
tuition assistance, 403(b), retirement plan
United States, North Carolina, Davidson

Are you interested in technology as a social and learning tool that brings people together? Do you love helping others brainstorm and better appreciate the ways technology changes people, organizations and systems? Do you enjoy being a go-to resource for colleagues, family and friends with technology questions from simple troubleshooting exercises to larger questions about emerging technologies?

If you thrive on diagnosing problems and fixing them yourself (or knowing just who to call for help), if the prospect of serving diverse needs across a variety of disciplines is more interesting than intimidating, you'll fit right in as an Application Analyst on the Academic Technology (AcTech) team. As your knowledge of Davidson's unique tech landscape expands, so will the number of people who rely on you for your expertise.

Don't worry if you don't have all the answers on your first day. At Davidson, we're committed to helping you grow. Our Technology & Innovation (T&I) Department will provide the training and resources you need to become the expert we know you can be.

So what qualities will set you up for success? Glad you asked! The successful candidate will:

  • Be a team player: You contribute valuable insights during group activities and foster a collaborative environment.
  • Be an active listener: You show respect and understanding while actively listening to others.
  • Be proactive: You demonstrate a high level of responsibility and take initiative. Beyond just problem-solving, you work to anticipate them and head them off.
  • Be a rock under pressure: You stay cool and collected, even in high-stress situations. You treat everyone with respect and empathy.
  • Be a people person: You get along well with others and build strong relationships.

These interpersonal skills are crucial, since you'll be interacting with everyone on our small but vibrant campus.

On the technical side, while we'll provide thorough training, a basic comfort level with technology is helpful. You don't need to build a computer from scratch, but as long as you can tell RAM from a hard drive, and you know how often "Try turning it off and back on again" really does fix it, you're in the right place. A passion for technology, especially educational technology, will help you speak our language. Clear communication is key-you should be adept at explaining instructions and guides to users, and reducing complex ideas to digestible chunks. The Application Analyst will make recommendations on the most effective ways to use technology, from input on classroom design, to software review for incorporation into curriculum. This role mixes your understanding of hardware and software, with the ability to pull information from people who sometimes don't have the words to say what they need. It would be unfair to expect you to know every piece of technology on campus thoroughly, but it's important to gather why the end user is requesting it.

Here are some things our team is responsible for:

  • Understanding business processes and functional needs related to the use cases for the products and services in our portfolio, including general data integration requirements, and represents those to the vendor, other teams, and service stakeholders.
  • Providing advanced product support, including system configuration, troubleshooting system problems, escalating problems with the vendor, testing before and after updates, and providing feedback to the vendor on product needs and features.
  • Staying abreast of the latest advancements in technology that can be applied to educational settings. Focusing on how these technologies can be used effectively for adult learners, considering the principles of andragogy.
  • Supporting department/division product owners by answering questions, providing technical and process advice, coaching, mentoring and training, as requested and as appropriate.
  • Supporting the AV needs of instructional technology. You don't have to build a room from scratch, but sometimes we might have to jump in the AV rack to route video in rooms, or support a class that is having AV issues.

Join us at Davidson College, where your tech skills and friendly attitude will make a lasting impact on our community. We can't wait to welcome you to the crew!
