The History Department at the University of Colorado Denver seeks to hire a lecturer with a specialization in African history and with extensive experience in supporting learners in higher education. The teaching load of this position is two courses per year, with options to teach Maymester and summer courses as well. The lecturer will be responsible for teaching our department's courses in African history, including the Intro to African History, History of Southern Africa, Africa since Independence, and Africa and the Atlantic Slave Trade. In addition to these required qualifications, the preferred qualifications for this position include a willingness to teach Globalization since 1945 and collaborate with our Public History colleagues in developing a course on public memory of the transatlantic slave trade and slavery in the Americas. Above all, we seek a colleague who can bring direct experiences of Africa to our diverse student body, through history courses that serve students of History, International Studies, and other disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.

Lecturer Job Description

What you will do:



  • Teach two courses per year in African history, as well as other courses in global history as needed.

Qualifications you already possess (Minimum Qualifications)

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.



  • MA in History or a related field
  • Experience in teaching in higher education
  • Preferred Qualification to possess (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Direct, first-hand experience in Africa, including educational and human rights initiatives.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



  • Demonstrated knowledge of African history is required, and in addition, direct experience in Africa is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated pedagogical innovation.
  • Excellence in teaching and mentoring.
  • Dedication to student success.


Conditions of Employment



  • This position requires an onsite presence on campus 5 days a week.


Mental, Physical, and/or Environmental Requirements



  • The ability to sit for extended periods, stand and walk occasionally, reach with hands and arms, use hands to manipulate a keyboard and mouse, and have good near vision for computer work; often requiring minimal lifting, but may involve bending or reaching to retrieve items from shelves or drawers.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $1,615 per credit hour (lower division), $,1,645 per credit hour (upper division) or $1,808 per credit hour (graduate level).

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
