Summary
Your primary responsibility is to assist experienced cable splicers in installing, testing, maintaining, and repairing communication systems such as the rearrangement, and maintenance of outside cable; climbing poles, works aloft on platforms as well as underground in manholes, cable vaults, ditches, and performs other duties as may be assigned.

General Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
(All work is performed under the direction of a Cable Splicer, supervisor and/or other management)
* Wears appropriate safety apparel and is aware of and follows all established safety practices and procedures.
* Loads necessary tools, material and equipment on Company vehicles and drives or rides to work locations.
* Connects and rearranges cable facilities associated with aerial, buried, underground and in buildings according to engineering design by utilizing hand tools and specialized equipment.
* Utilizes special test equipment to test or locate cable trouble.
* Work with open flame and hot liquids such as molten lead to make airtight closures on cable sleeves.
* Reads and interprets work prints and diagrams.
* Climbs poles, works aloft on platforms, enters tunnels, buildings, trenches, cable vaults and manholes.
* Uses test equipment to check for gas in manholes, empties water and debris from manholes.
* Operates power equipment such as pumps, compressors, blowers, backhoes and trenchers.
* Monitors and ensures proper cable pressurization is maintained.
* Inspects vehicles for safe operating conditions and ensures proper servicing is done on such vehicles.
* Maintains accuracy in all reporting functions.
* Classroom training may be away from home location.
* Works long hours during cutovers, emergency conditions or in inclement weather. Work may be performed aloft in winter and at night; also, in dirty, damp manholes often in awkward positions. Work involves considerable eye concentration. Repair work is done under the pressure of time.
* May be required to workday, evening or night tours, overtime, emergency callouts, weekends and out-of-town assignments as required.
* Heavy lifting required in handling tools, materials and supplies.
* May be required to perform additional duties and tasks as required by the Company.
* Cable Routing: Help with the routing and pulling of cables in various environments, such as aerial, underground, and inside buildings, while adhering to safety guidelines
* Cable Stripping and Preparation: Assist in stripping and preparing cables for splicing, ensuring clean and accurate cable ends for optimal splicing results.
* Splice Closure Assembly: Assist in the assembly and preparation of splice closures, ensuring they are ready for splicing and protected from environmental factors fusing and mechanically splicing fiber optic cables, while maintaining high precision and low loss
* Testing and Troubleshooting: Support the team in performing basic tests and troubleshooting activities on spliced Cables to ensure quality and reliability of the installed connections.
* Safety Compliance: Follow safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a safe work environment and prevent accidents during Cable splicing and installation tasks.
* Documentation: Assist in maintaining accurate records of work completed, including splicing logs, test results, and project progress.
* Site Cleanup: Ensure that work areas are kept clean and organized after completing tasks, leaving no debris or hazards behind

Basic Qualifications
* Must be able to read, write and perform the following mathematical calculations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
* Must have ability to distinguish true colors.
* Normal hearing; must be able to distinguish tones.
* Requires climbing poles/ladders up to 60 feet.
* Requires frequent lifting up to 75 pounds; occasional lifting up to 150 pounds.
* Frequent reaching or moving of heavy objects by shoving or pulling with arms and hands.
* May require frequent stooping and crawling in closed areas, including vaults.
* Requires prolonged standing and off-balanced positioning while working aloft.
* May work outdoors in all weather conditions.
* Valid state driver's license.
* Ability to drive a vehicle with a manual gear shift.
* Previous experience in electrical work including the use of meters is helpful.
* Ability to work varying shifts and hours including possible overtime and night shifts if Cable work is needed during safe time.
