Job Summary

The candidate will provide direction and operational leadership of the clinical research studies in the program under the guidance of the Nurse Svc Supv 2 at BASIC and/or PI to ensure delivery on time, within budget, and of high-quality in compliance with ICH GCP, Internal SOPs and all other applicable regulations for FDA regulated drug trials. The Clinical Research Supervisor will supervise a team of clinical research coordinators and oversee execution of assignments The team coordinates multiple open studies which involve recruitment from a Level 1 trauma center and follow-up through 6-months. The candidate should be experienced in project management, a critical thinker, and capable of problem solving and aligning the priorities with trial outcomes and timelines. A good candidate should demonstrate experience in traumatic brain injury (TBI) clinical trial development, working with sponsors/vendors/and or CROs, compliance and regulatory oversight, and planning/completing operational activities to achieve a database lock. Knowledge of TBI, experience with recruitment from a Level 1 trauma center, and familiarity in collecting and handling clinical/biospecimens/imaging/outcomes/investigational product data would be a plus. Other duties may be assigned, as necessary.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $87,000 - $189,000 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

Within the Department of Neurological Surgery, the Brain and Spinal Injury Center (BASIC) is a large clinical and research division with over 40 physicians, nurses, research faculty, staff and trainees at the ZSFG Hospital campus. Many colleagues from other departments, other universities throughout the US, and other countries form an active group of investigators and staff with whom we collaborate. The incumbent will serve as a member of the BASIC traumatic brain injury (TBI) clinical research team with a focus on supervising both internal operations and providing subject matter expertise to external stakeholders.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area
  • Minimum of 1 years of Lead/Supervisory/Manager experience
  • Minimum 2 years of in traumatic brain injury (TBI) clinical research experience
  • Clinical Trial Professional certification from a professional society within one year in position
  • Working knowledge of clinical or laboratory research, clinical trial recruitment, eligibility, protocol adherence, quality data submission and adverse event reporting
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, prioritize projects and meet the demands of a fast-paced and dynamic work environment. Adaptable to quickly changing priorities
  • Demonstrated skills in employee supervision and HR administration. Demonstrated experience in training others, particularly in the field of research
  • Critical thinking skills to evaluate issues and identify a potential solution
  • Clear and concise communicator; good verbal and written communication skills; both
  • Good interpersonal skills, including but not limited to: problem-solving, teamwork development, leadership, mentorship. Interpersonal skills to effectively motivate others. Works well with others to achieve common goals. Ability to cultivate relationships with multiple stakeholders at various levels of administration
  • Experience with clinical trial development, working with sponsors/vendors/and or CROs, compliance and regulatory oversight, and planning/completing operational activities to achieve a database lock
  • At least one year of experience in project/program coordination either at UCSF or at another academic or research institution
  • Experience with electronic medical records; medical terminology
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations as seen at a safety net hospital, preferably in trauma
  • Knowledgeable in IRB requirements as well as FDA regulations for human subject safety

Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced degree preferred
  • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in word processing and spreadsheet software. Effectively uses campus' clinical information and documentation application programs. Proven ability utilizing clinical trial management systems
  • Experience with multi-site study operations and coordinating center management
  • Demonstrated familiarity in collecting and handling clinical/biospecimens/imaging/outcomes/investigational product data
  • Knowledge of UCSF and departmental policies in the usage of CHR online iRIS system, policies for reimbursement, guidelines for research, confidentiality, and HIPAA regulations
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet software
