JOB SUMMARY:
The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a full-time staff of over 250 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.
The CSIS Chair on India and Emerging Asia Economics aims to unlock the full potential of U.S. partnerships with India and the broader Asia region. While continuing to lead the Center's work on India, the Chair has expanded to include emerging economies across Asia, fostering U.S. economic security, economic development, and deepening business engagement between these countries and the United States. We remain the leading authority on state-level political-economic issues in India and have spearheaded multiple funded projects to enhance subnational engagement. We work towards building stronger ties between Indian policymakers and other nations in the Global South. Richard Rossow, is a senior adviser at CSIS, and the Chair on India and Emerging Asia Economics.
CSIS is currently seeking candidates for our role as Associate Fellow to support our growing range of work on India's economic reforms, U.S.-India commercial ties, Indian state-level engagement, and economic issues across other key nations in the Indo-Pacific.
The ideal candidate:
* Has deep familiarity with the dynamics of center-state relations in India.
* Has experience in engaging mid-level and senior-level state officials in India.
* Has familiarity with key partner countries across the Indo-Pacific and related economic and commercial matters.
* Has experience in managing others' writing and editing their work.
* Has experience with social media platforms and innovative tools for conveying complex policy issues to a wide audience.
The Associate Fellow will have both research and programmatic responsibilities.
This role pays between $65,000 and $72,000, depending on the candidate's experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:
* Managing the team's press and publications efforts. This includes articles and events produced by our staff but also managing our external affiliates (including onboarding new non-residents and renewing existing non-residents, as required).
* Researching and writing related to team projects in India and across Emerging Asia.
* Managing the India Reforms Scorecard- checking for monthly updates and, ahead of India's national elections, rebuilding the Scorecard to reflect a new set of priorities.
* Writing occasional articles, assisting with drafting longer team reports.
* Leading the team's social media accounts (Twitter/X, LinkedIn).
* Updating the CSIS India + Emerging Asia website and our Engaging Indian States microsite.
* Overseeing research and some administrative tasks by junior staff and interns, as appropriate.
* Managing the program's database including taking steps to increase subscribers
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
* Must have at least five years' experience working in/ with India in a policy role.
* Must have strong communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
* Computer and mobile phone / technology sufficient to work from home (though we are currently in the office Monday-Thursday, with Fridays as optional "work from home.").
* Strong research skills with a focus on economic and commercial affairs.
* Experience with administrative tasks and attention to detail in all/ most of the following: Databases, event logstics. .
* Must be eligible to work in Washington, DC and commit at least 35 hours per week.
* Must have the ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
* Must be willing to travel to India approximately two times per year for project-related work, including travel to India's state capitals.
* Must have demonstrated experience managing competing priorities and multiple projects under tight deadlines.
* Education: A candidate must have a bachelor's degree. A master's degree, law degree, or Ph.D. are desirable.
* Existing connections with media outlets, particularly in India, is desirable.
* Hindi language ability not, required but highly desirable.
