Manager, Gas Accounting - Hybrid

The Manager, Gas Accounting role is an exempt, managerial level position responsible for managing all aspects of natural gas accounting for a producer services book of business. Primary responsibilities for this role include executing producer settlement statements and handling accounting activities related to marketing natural gas and crude oil for our producer clients; monthly balancing of physical transport volumes that includes volume balancing, analysis, allocation, and reporting and analyzing monthly pipeline invoices and statements to ensure correct transport volumes/rates and allocation of reported volumes.

This position reports to the Director of Operations, UES, has direct reports and is located onsite at the Mansfield Power & Gas office in Greenway Plaza, Houston, Texas.

Responsibilities:

Operational Accounting:

  • Oversee and review all monthly producer settlement statements (appx. 150) prior to sending to leadership for distribution to producers.
  • Ensure all balances for the pipe match contracts and calculate the WACOG (weighted average cost of goods) for each pipeline, pricing area, etc.
  • Supervise and manage daily operations of the gas accounting team, including transaction recording, month-end close, and reconciliations.
  • Ensure that the gas accounting team provides accurate and timely reporting of natural gas volumes, revenues, and expenses.
  • Coordinate with marketing and operations teams to validate gas sales, purchases, transportation, and storage data.
  • Participates in new client meetings to collaborate, set expectations, and integrate business into internal systems.

Strategic Planning & Analysis:

  • Review and approve monthly volumetric models supporting revenue recognition, inclusive of complex functions (e.g., joint use pipeline activities, balancing / cash out functions, and storage considerations).
  • Assist in financial modeling and risk assessment processes related to gas revenue and expenses by providing insights and analysis to support budgeting, forecasting and decision making.
  • Respond to internal and external stakeholders regarding financial results and special reporting requests.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Maintain effective internal processes and metrics to ensure regulatory controls are in place and being observed.
  • Complete and/or provide inputs for recurring regulatory reporting deliverables (e.g., FERC forms and quarterly and annual EIA filings).
  • Monitor compliance with internal policies and external regulations (e.g., FERC, SEC, state agencies).
  • Prepare and review internal and external financial reports related to gas accounting.
  • Work directly with internal and external auditors as required to respond to audit requests relating to revenue and cost of sales.

Process Improvement & Systems Management:

  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and collaborate with peers to provide innovative ideas and insights to drive operational excellence.
  • Manage gas accounting systems, software upgrades and integration efforts.
  • Ensure all critical gas accounting processes are documented, including data handling, reconciliations, and month-end processes.
  • Establish regular touchpoints with Operations, Marketing, and I.T. to align on data, allocations, and exceptions.

Position Requirements:

Formal Education & Certification:

  • Four (4) year degree in either Accounting, Finance or a closely related degree field (or) a minimum of a two (2) year Associate's degree in a similar degree path and direct experience.

Knowledge & Experience:

  • 5 or more years of direct experience in natural gas accounting.
  • Strong understanding of the movement of natural gas upstream/midstream/downstream.
  • Experience working with complex billing systems, contracts, or pricing models is highly preferred.
  • Excellence in communicating and presenting complex information to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

Qualifications & Characteristics:

  • Must be willing to work unusual/extended hours as necessary during seasonal peaks which may include partial weekend coverage.
  • Individual must have ability to handle heavy workloads in a potentially stressful environment with multiple deadlines.
  • Comfortable working with large amounts of data and complex models.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to multi-task under tight deadlines.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills and the ability to work in a fast paced, team environment.

Work Environment & Travel:

  • 40-hour work week with 3 days in the office and 2 days remote, business conditions permitting. Eligibility for the hybrid work week begins after completion of the ninety-day introductory period of employment where all training will occur onsite.
  • This position may have planned, overnight travel to other site locations within the Company that could include weekends and Holidays.
  • Must be available to work flexible hours as needed.
  • Sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other computer components.
