Job Description
ECU Office of Innovation and Engagement at East Carolina University is currently seeking a highly motivated and self-directed Economic and Community Development Coordinator student intern to support ongoing economic and community development initiatives. This position offers a hands-on opportunity to gain experience in regional development strategy, data management, and professional communication.
The intern will contribute to a comprehensive assessment of economic development resources and strategies across ECU's 29-county focus area in Eastern North Carolina. Ideal candidates will bring a keen eye for detail, strong writing ability, and familiarity with digital design and mapping tools.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect, organize, and analyze data relevant to economic and community development across the 29-county region.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports, briefs, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Create visually compelling materials using tools such as Adobe InDesign and/or Canva.
  • Utilize GIS software to support spatial analysis and mapping tasks.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and external partners while maintaining professionalism in all communications.
  • Work independently to meet project deadlines, following an initial orientation and overview of project objectives.

Preferred (Majors, Experience, GPA, etc.)
Currently enrolled in a graduate degree program related to Urban Planning, Public Administration, Economics, Geography, Community Development, Business, or another related field.
Demonstrated experience with software tools such as:


  • GIS (Geographic Information Systems)
  • Adobe InDesign
  • Canva or other graphic design platforms
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
