Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

About the Position

The Materials Testing Technician performs a wide array of important quality assurance testing on transportation project materials. Working in both the laboratory and out in the field, conducts materials testing, inspections, research, and investigations of construction materials, all while applying methodologies commonly accepted in roadway and bridge construction and maintenance, and ensuring compliance with established standards, specifications, and provisions. We Require

  • Two (2) years ofexperience working in a construction materials laboratory engaged in both field and laboratory testing of materials utilized in construction and maintenance of streets, highways, bridges, and associated structures
  • High school diploma or GED
  • A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis

Other Requirements

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain by the time of hire, a valid Arizona driver's license and have an acceptable driving record.
  • One of the following certifications: ATTI Field Certification and/or ACI Field Certification and Nuclear Gauge short course certification, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months from the hire date

  • ATTI certifications, including Asphalt, Soils, Field Certification Level 1, and/or Nuclear Gauge Certification

Job Contributions

  • Performs laboratory testing of all construction materials utilized in the construction of assigned projects
  • Performs field inspections and testing to ensure adequacy of construction materials and methods
  • Performs field inspections of vendor/supplier facilities, equipment, and manufacturing capabilities
  • Participates in all assigned proficiency sample testing and on-site certification inspections performed by other national certifying agencies
  • Completes and reports test results of assigned special research projects in accordance with instructions specified by the requester or the laboratory supervisor
  • Prepares and submits inspection and/or testing reports and summaries for review
  • Performs maintenance and calibrates/verifies the status of laboratory testing equipment
  • Participates in training and assists in training new Materials Testing Technicians as needed

Working Conditions

This position may require lifting or exerting 50-100 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds constantly. Work may be performed in either an office setting or in a field environment. While performing the regular duties in this position, the employee may be exposed to loud noises, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, atmospheric conditions, fumes, dust, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and other related conditions and/or situations.
