Job Summary

The Specialist, Student Support advances the success and holistic thriving of multiple identities, including members of global student populations. This position will facilitate regular student communication, outreach and community involvement, professional development, and recommend implementation and changes to institutional policies and practices to support the academic and co-curricular success of international student populations. The Specialist, Student Support understands state and national legislation affecting students and will serve as liaison between both internal departmental and external organizations to help bridge the gap of resources and services.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the purpose of community colleges and the vision of Dallas College

  • Skills in technological support and delivery of student programs and service models; knowledge and skill in the use of integrated software systems; and proficiency in the use of Dashboards and Microsoft application software

  • Experience leading or managing change initiatives.

  • Employ and deploy data-informed and results oriented interventions.

  • Ability to identify and address opportunities and challenges that arise as a result of Dallas College's current transition.

  • Understanding of contemporary issues in higher education and community colleges is required through professional development activities.

  • Experience working with student support units, student case management and delivering wrap around services.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information exposed to during business regarding students, supervisors, or other employees.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of national and local policy impacting undocumented student populations.

  • Highly collaborative leader with experience in a comparably diverse and complex college/university with a proven track record of enhancing quality, excellence, and student success.

  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations regarding student discipline

  • Shared governance and evidence of strong ability to work effectively and collaboratively with administration, faculty, students, staff, and other constituent groups and partners, both within and outside a college or university communities.

  • Experience in strategic planning, and assessment of program(s) effectiveness, and development of guidelines to enhance student success units within the institution and with accrediting bodies.

  • Excellent time management, and organizational and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.

  • Ability to stay informed of the rapidly evolving social and political landscape impacting underserved student populations.

  • Knowledge and understand best practices for students in relationship to identity and student development, retention, academic achievement, and emerging campus climate issues.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, complex ideas, and information to a variety of stakeholders/constituents within the Dallas College community network related to career and academic requirements.

Physical Requirements

Normal physical job functions performed within a standard office environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with physical challenges to perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in related field. Master's degree preferred. Official transcripts required.

  • Two (2) years of experience developing and facilitating programs in areas of global intercultural competency and student leadership development or case management of international student populations.

  • Current and valid Texas driver's license required and acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to work extended hours beyond the regular 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and/or 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. work shifts and during heavy registration peak times including nights and weekends.

  • Understanding compliance issues impacted international student populations.

  • Experience working effectively with students and staff from diverse populations.

  • Excellent interpersonal relations skills

  • Bilingual or multilingual preferred.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, implement, and support programs designed to assist with entry, connection, persistence, and completion efforts to assist with the academic success of members of global student populations at Dallas College.

  • Develop a case management and service model for these student populations to resolve gaps in services.

  • Builds cross-divisional partnerships to implement high impact practices and interventions to support the success of current global student populations.

  • Collaborate with college partners to implement strategies that will enhance the recruitment, development, enrichment, retention, and the overall student experience for members of various communities.

  • Create professional development opportunities for the campus community to increase awareness on multiple student experiences and has oversight of institutional support systems.

  • Maintain appropriate databases, materials, records, and/or data necessary to provide statistical information to internal and external entities related to recruitment, retention, student progress, program success, or as requested.

  • Serve as advisor to student clubs and organizations and assists with departmental co-curricular global and intercultural student engagement programs.

  • Build community partnerships with local organizations to support student success.

  • Provide in-services training and facilitates meetings, workshops, and seminars to identify issues, develop recommendations, and support staff. Serves as a resource to staff, faculty, students, and campus community on student engagement and activities.

  • Advise senior administrators in implementing programs, new initiatives, and special projects.

  • Responsible for ensuring that all programs and activities comply with college, state, and federal regulations.

  • Develop, administer, and analyze continuous assessment of programs.

  • Prepare and evaluate statistical, analytical, and narrative reports to be used for decision making, resource allocation and program improvement.

  • Responsible for coordinating various student services and functions such as, but not limited to, case management services, financial aid orientation and paperwork processing, new student orientations/campus tours, tutoring services, student recognition ceremonies, tracking student progress, graduation, transfer assistance, and other related student support services.

  • Coordinate and facilitate interactive workshops that promote experiential learning.

  • Complete required Dallas College Professional Development training hours per academic year.

  • Perform other duties as assigned including monitoring the transportation of and/or accompanying (driving) students to program activities, workshops, and engagement opportunities.

  • The position is required to be on campus. Although the support specialist will be housed at a specific campus location, the individual will be supporting students, programs, and events across the seven Dallas College campuses when needed.
