Position Highlights

The School of Natural Resources and the Environment is accepting applications for a Research Technician I.

The Research Technician I position will collect, classify, and identify aquatic macroinvertebrates from southern Arizona rivers and streams. Specifically, the position will collect samples, curation of the samples and record the relevant data. The position as well will perform lab and taxonomic to sort and identify samples under the microscope in the lab on campus. The position will also occasionally involve public outreach events related to aquatic macroinvertebrates with K-12 science teachers and their classes in the region.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Classify and identify aquatic macroinvertebrates, in the lab, from the southern Arizona rivers to the family and genus levels.
  • Collect samples of aquatic macroinvertebrates during field work outings in southern Arizona.
  • Perform outreach and educational activities related to aquatic macroinvertebrates and the Santa Cruz River in Tucson.
  • Curate samples and assist in macroinvertebrate data entry and analyses.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of aquatic macroinvertebrates taxonomy to identify them to the genus level.
  • Skilled in microscope use and lab sample processing techniques.
  • Ability to conduct field work in desert environments during the summer heat.
  • Skilled in public speaking and presenting information to K-12 students.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or High School diploma equivalency.
  • Prior work experience not required.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree, preferably in Ecology, Fisheries, or related field.
  • 1 year of prior work experience.
