The Position

The Clinical Instructor plays a critical role in the success of the NAVTA Approved Veterinary Assistant (AVA) Program by overseeing the clinical (externship) portion of the program. This position is responsible for fostering and maintaining relationships with local veterinary hospitals and clinics, ensuring a smooth and supportive transition for students from the classroom to clinical experience.

The Clinical Instructor serves as the primary liaison between students, externship sites, and the program, ensuring all documentation is completed, students are in good academic standing, and expectations are communicated. This role also includes partnering with the program instructor to facilitate hands-on workshops and conduct clinical skills reviews and competency assessments prior to graduation. Additionally, this role supports the growth of the AVA program through community outreach and partnership development. This role may involve remote work with occasional student-facing classes and workshops. Periodic travel to community events, campus-based meetings or open houses may be requested. Flexible schedule with occasional evenings or weekends for outreach events and clinical workshops.

Instructional Duration: Semester Based

Rate: $458/CEU (Continuing Education Units)
*Pay per class is dependent on the number of assigned Continuing Education Units (1 CEU is equivalent to 10 hours of work)


What You Will Do

  1. Pair students with appropriate clinical externship sites based on location, cultural fit, and site availability.
  2. Conduct resume reviews and provide feedback to students before site introductions.
  3. Facilitate initial email introductions between students and clinical sites.
  4. Conduct regular check-ins with students and site mentors throughout the clinical experience.
  5. Ensure all required paperwork is completed, signed, and filed promptly.
  6. Verify student eligibility and good academic standing before entering the clinical phase.
  7. Conduct clinical skills reviews with students to prepare them for externship success.
  8. Collaborate with program instructors to organize and lead key hands-on workshops.
  9. Participate in competency assessments to ensure students meet program standards prior to graduation.
  10. Build and maintain strong relationships with local veterinary practices and professionals.
  11. Serve as a point of contact for hospitals regarding program expectations, student support, and feedback.
  12. Provide guidance and troubleshooting throughout the externship period.
  13. Ensure clear and professional communication between the college, student, and clinical site.
  14. Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records and evaluations.
  15. Represent the AVA program in the veterinary community through email outreach, strategic partnerships, and industry events.
  16. Participate in open houses, career fairs, and community events to promote the program to potential students and partners.
  17. Other duties as assigned.

The Successful Candidate Must Have

  1. Credentialed Veterinary Technician (CVT, LVT, or RVT) or DVM preferred; relevant experience in veterinary education and/or training may be considered.
  2. Minimum 5 years of experience in a clinical veterinary setting; teaching or mentoring experience preferred.
  3. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  5. Proficiency with email, spreadsheets, and cloud-based documentation systems.
  6. Passion for education, workforce development, and student success.

Even Better If You Have

  1. Knowledge of NAVTA AVA program standards and veterinary assistant competencies.
  2. Experience coordinating externships or clinical placements.
  3. Experience conducting hands-on skills training or assessments.
  4. A strong network within the local veterinary community is a plus.
