Position Overview
Monarch Watch is an international organization based at the University of Kansas that leads education, conservation, and research programs focused on the monarch butterfly, its habitat, and its spectacular fall migration. The Education Intern will gain experience with a variety of types of educational programing, video/photography, and insect rearing, as well as with working with Monarch Watch team members, volunteers, and partners with different backgrounds, interests, and perspectives. The Education Intern will report to the Monarch Watch Program Manager.

This is a temporary position for a 3-month appointment.

Job Description
65% - Assist with educational programing and insect rearing
  • Rear insects for educational programing.
  • Provide training to students and volunteers.
  • Develop educational programs and materials.
  • Support other activities as needed.
25% - Work with the public
  • Represent Monarch Watch at events.
  • Give educational tours of Monarch Watch spaces.
  • Respond to inquiries via email and phone.
10% - Review/revise/develop content
  • Review/revise and develop content for various Monarch Watch platforms, including the website, print materials, and videos. The content will focus on the education, conservation, and research missions of Monarch Watch.

Required Qualifications
  1. High School Diploma/GED.
  2. Experience with monarch butterfly biology and conservation, as evidenced in application materials.
  3. Strong written communication skills, as evidenced in application materials.
  4. Experience communicating with the public, including with all audiences and age groups, and across multiple settings (in-person, virtual, recorded, etc.), as demonstrated by previous work experience and application materials.
  5. Experience that required strong organization and time management skills, as evidenced in application materials.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. High school or college coursework in biology or related field, as evidenced in application materials.
  2. Experience working with online media content in a professional setting (e.g., developing content from the perspective of an organization), as demonstrated in application materials.
  3. Experience working with/around insects as evidenced in application materials.
