Working under the general direction of the Section Head for Interventional Cardiology and a collaborating physician, the advanced practice clinician (Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner) provides direct care to patients in a high volume inpatient clinical service. S/he develops, implements, and evaluates a program of specialized health care for a select patient population with cardiovascular disease. S/he promotes a collaborative relationship among various health care professionals toward continuity of patient care and efficient use of resources. S/he serves as a role model for professional medical practice in the management of patients with cardiovascular disease.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: I

Inpatient APP Role:

  • The APP works collaboratively with the Interventional Cardiology Program Leadership, Physicians, and APP colleagues seeing patients on the inpatient interventional service. The APP practices in accord with practitioner guidelines per state and hospital regulations
    • Performs history and physical and provides clinical management for procedural patients in collaboration with the Collaborating MD
    • Provides care to patients pre and post interventional procedure (diagnostic cath, complex PCI, and structural heart disease)
    • Sees patients on a consultative basis in the emergency department and other medical and surgical floors throughout MGH.
    • Utilizes knowledge & training to identify, prevent or solve complex and/or recurring patient care problems.
    • Orders appropriate procedures and testing particular to the select patient population according to guidelines.
    • Performs medically delegated aspects of patient care according to practice guidelines.
    • Collaborates with health care professionals within other cardiology sub specialties and outside of cardiology to facilitate a comprehensive plan of care and coordinate resources.
    • Maintains and promotes relationships with health care providers, both within the institution and outside of it.
    • Serves as resource to health care professionals in area(s) of expertise.
    • Monitors patient outcomes in accordance with defined standards of patient care.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • The APP will perform independent patient visits both follow up care and new/urgent consults.
  • Perform pre-procedure assessments in the lab's holding area, the Emergency Department, and on inpatient floors as needed
  • Obtain informed consent for procedures.
  • Utilize advanced practice knowledge to identify, prevent or solve complex patient care problems.
  • Perform medically delegated aspects of patient care according to practice guidelines.
  • Collaborate with health care professionals to facilitate a comprehensive plan of care and coordinate resources.
  • Write orders which are in accord with current guidelines.
  • Maintain and practice in accord with practitioner guidelines per state and hospital regulations.

Education and Professional Growth

Participates in the development of formal and informal educational programs for health care professionals

  • Responsible for own professional growth and maintenance of required credentials.
  • Maintains the standards and educational requirements specific to the position and licensure.
  • Takes responsibilities for leadership and participation on committees and task forces of the health care system.
  • Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current health care practice/research.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current Massachusetts licensure as a registered nurse in the expanded role (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA)
  • Current Federal & Massachusetts licensures to dispense Controlled Substances
  • Certification in advanced practice nursing or physician assistant
  • Certification in Basic Life Support
  • Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Fluent in verbal and written language skills
  • Demonstrated competence in providing cardiac care
  • Effective communicator with the ability to transfer knowledge (orally and in writing)
  • Computer skills to support administrative and clinical tasks, to include EHR & Microsoft Office applications

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in both a physician medical office and a licensed hospital setting. The work may require the lifting of heavy objects and patients, as well as exposure to potentially infective material. Work requires contact with needles and other sharp instruments, monitoring devices, and other state-of-the-art equipment. Walking throughout the ambulatory space and hospital facilities as well as prolonged standing can be expected.

Shifts:

Day shift 10 and 12 hour shifts available. M-F

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:

Maintains eligible enrollment with contracted health insurance providers

Completes documentation and submits charges for reimbursement in a timely manner
