This Position reports to:

Electrical Systems Department Manager

As an intern, you will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through various projects. Each day, you will acquire knowledge by performing tasks as directed. You will also showcase your skills by supporting ABB's operations and enhancing personal education/employment opportunities.

The work model for the role is onsite in Raleigh, North Carolina.

You will be mainly accountable for:

  • Conduct literature survey and benchmarking to assess the state of art methods for a given problem

  • Actively participate in applied research activities in the area of distribution grid resilience, including distribution protection and control, modeling and simulation, and microgrids, resulting in proofs of concept, prototypes, patents, and/or academic publications

  • Contribute to the promotion of the application of distribution grid resilience within ABB's customer industries, and develop prototype solutions using hardware-in-loop testing environment, such as Opal-RT

  • Protection and control schemes of distribution systems, such as protection devices, converter fault current limiting, control tuning, and protection coordination

  • Modeling and simulation of distribution grids via software such as Matlab/Simulink and PSCAD/RSCAD

Qualifications for the role:

  • Currently enrolled in a master's or PhD degree program in Electrical Engineering, in the United States.

  • Intern must have reliable transportation to and from the worksite.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorshipnow and in the future.

  • Utilize critical thinking skills to analyze complex situations and develop strategic solutions.

  • Effectively organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.

  • Exhibit the capability to manage several tasks at once while maintaining high standards of quality.

  • Collaborate with team members to convey ideas, share information, and provide updates on project progress.

  • Knowledge of power system fault protection

  • Modeling and simulation expertise in Matlab/Simulink and Opal-RT

  • Modeling and simulation expertise in PSCAD/RSCAD and RTDS

  • Modeling and simulation expertise in EnergyPlus and OpenDSS

The hourly rate is determined by things such as the successful applicant's qualifications, graduation year and experience. This position is expected to pay between $20 - $34 per hour.
