Number of Positions: 7

(Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Starting Salary: $72,000.00 annually

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) - BARGAINING UNIT 1, 3, 4 & 5. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under immediate supervision, performs entry-level professional auditing duties where the position is directly supervised on basic auditing assignments (e.g., small businesses with few tax obligations, delegate agencies with simple contracts), and conducts out of area audits under the guidance of senior-level auditors, and performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

* Measures taxpayers' level of compliance in enforcement or refund assignments.

* Communicates with taxpayers to create an audit plan.

* Conducts sample testing.

* Computes and discusses findings, compiles results into a comprehensive audit file and shares results with taxpayers.

* Examines basic accounting records and computerized ledgers to determine compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, the municipal tax ordinance, and funding agency and contract specifications.

* Interprets tax ordinances, contract specifications and reporting requirements to business managers and delegate agency personnel.

* Reviews routine tax returns, invoices, and related business documents to determine the tax liability of business establishments.

* Audits invoices, journals, and bank statements of delegate agencies to ensure compliance with funding source and contract requirements and recommends corrective action for contract violations.

* Computes taxes owed including penalties for businesses found to be in non-compliance with the tax ordinance.

* Organizes financial data and prepares computerized spreadsheets and analyses of data.

* Assists in preparing summaries of audit findings for inclusion in comprehensive reports.

* May participate in special audit investigations and in the preparation of related reports.

Additional duties may be required for this position.

Location: 2 N. LaSalle St., Floor 13, Chicago, IL 60602

Days: Monday through Friday

Hours: 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM

THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in accounting or a directly related field with 15 credit hours in accounting.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

* Bachelor's degree or higher in accounting

* Proficiency using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel

NOTE: You must provide your college or university transcripts with 15 semester hours of accounting courses at the time of interview. IF YOU FAIL TO PROVIDE this information at the time of interview, you will not be allowed to proceed with the interview and will no longer be considered for this position.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to successfully complete an interview which will include a written exercise and/or skills assessment as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.
