About Global Labor and Work

The Global Labor and Work department examines the relationships among workers, employers, and government policies through interdisciplinary approaches including economics, law, sociology, and more. Faculty teach courses grounded in American society while also exploring global labor issues, using methods from the social sciences, humanities, and legal fields. Topics include globalization, labor law, union movements, international migration, and labor systems across various regions. The department emphasizes comparative analysis and includes faculty experts on regions around the world, such as Asia, Latin America, and Africa.

The Opportunity

This role offers the chance to provide high-level administrative support to the teaching and research faculty, visiting lecturers, and graduate students in the Global Labor and Work Department. The position requires handling diverse and complex administrative tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage general program administration for ILR faculty initiatives.
  • Serve as liaison between the department chair, faculty, and university administration.
  • Coordinate academic faculty searches.
  • Support teaching and research activities, including preparation of class materials.
  • Maintain department and faculty websites, including Canvas pages.
  • Compile and proofread materials.
  • Prepare confidential documents.
  • Process faculty travel reimbursements.
  • Prepare and submit billing and expense reports.
  • Monitor departmental and faculty budgets and accounts.
  • Order office supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain course and research-related files.
  • Collaborate actively with the academic Administrative Assistant team.

What We Need

  • Associate's Degree and 2-4 years of office experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience in a teaching and research-based environment.
  • Strong ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting.
  • Capable of working independently with sound judgment and initiative.
  • Flexible and comfortable working with various work styles.
  • Excellent time management and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proactive team player with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Able to stay focused and productive in a disruptive environment.
  • Skilled in planning, organizing, and coordinating projects and events.
  • Exceptional organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Quick to learn new software, systems, and equipment.
  • Experience with monitoring and managing financial accounts.
  • Prior event planning experience.
  • General knowledge of database operations.

  • Bachelor's degree strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of six years of experience in an office setting.
  • Familiarity with Cornell's Concur travel and reimbursement system.
  • Experience with systems including PeopleSoft Faculty Center, Canvas, Drupal, Zoom, and Lyris.
  • Knowledge of Cornell's procurement tools such as Travel & Meal cards, eShop, and I Want Doc.
  • Proficiency in Kuali Financial Systems and Webfin2, with understanding of Cornell's financial policies.
  • Experience using Workday, OLGAA, Exchange Group Accounts, Cornell Box, Dropbox, and Academic Jobs Online.
  • Experience working with Drupal, HTML, or other web development tools.
  • Familiarity with survey tools such as SurveyGizmo or Qualtrics.
  • Knowledge of Mailchimp and similar online communication platforms.
  • Prior experience supervising students and working with college-age workers.
  • Skilled in proofreading and editing technical or scientific papers in the social sciences.
  • Demonstrated alignment with Cornell University's "Staff Skills for Success" and institutional values.
  • Background or experience in labor movements, workers' organizations, social justice, leadership development, human rights, adult education, or social science.

This is a full-time (39 hours/week) contract position that is based in Ithaca, NY with a hybrid work arrangement. Core hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The final schedule will be established in collaboration with the supervisor.
