BID/JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

SIGN HANGERS

Department of Transportation

Bureau of SM Operations

Number of Positions: 6

Salary: $42.44/hr.

These positions are open to the general public and all current city employees covered under the terms of the City's collective bargaining agreement with the Sheet Metal Workers - Local 73 (bargaining unit 41).

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS WILL RESULT IN A REJECTED BID APPLICATION.

Under supervision, performs manual work related to the assembly, installation, repair, and removal of a variety of signs used for traffic control and public safety, and performs related duties as required

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

* Reviews work orders, gathers, and loads supplies (i.e., signs, bolts, pipe, banding wire materials, ladders) for sign installation jobs

* Drives a van to work locations and sets up barricades and safety cones as needed to cordon off work areas and performs work in compliance with safety rules and regulations

* Assembles signs and brackets and fastens signs to posts

* Mounts and tightens steel bands to fasten signs to poles (i.e., street light poles)

* Removes damaged, hazardous, and outdated signs

* Operates a hand-held hydraulic pole/post driver to install sign bases in soil and installs pipe with attached sign into base

* Use a concrete drill and ram set to drill holes in concrete and bolt sign bases to sidewalks

* Operates power drills, ratchets, cutters, and grinders to prepare signs for hanging, to mount and tighten steel bands, and to cut protruding bolts

* Operates hydraulic lift platforms to access elevated areas for the installation and removal of signs

* Works from a bucket on a lift truck or van, riding up in the bucket to reach the location for signs (i.e., mast arms on traffic signal poles) and mounts, and fastens the signs in place

* Prepares daily activity reports listing supplies used, number of signs installed or removed, and time spent on each job

Location: Vary

Hours: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm

Days: Typically, Monday - Friday

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience

* One (1) year of work experience assembling or installing signs; OR

* One (1) year of work experience operating a variety of hand-held power tools.

Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications

* A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

* Exposure to outdoor weather conditions

* Exposure to loud noise, fumes, or dust

* Exposure to hazardous work conditions (heavy traffic, heavy machinery

* Work performed using ladders or a bucket on a lift truck or van

* Work performed at great heights with the use of safety belts and body harnesses

EQUIPMENT

* Hand tools (e.g., hammer, screwdriver, wrench, pliers)

* Power tools (e.g., gas and hydraulic-powered hand-held post drives, hydraulic Wacker, concrete drills, power drills, power ratchets, cutters, grinders)

* Personal protective equipment (e.g., hard hat, shoes, glasses, gloves, vest, pads)

* Safety devices or equipment (e.g., cones, barricades, body harness, safety belts)

* Standard office equipment (e.g., phone, printer, copier, computers, mobile devices)

* Standard productivity suites (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, etc.)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

* Substantial lifting (up to 75 pounds) is required

* Ability to stand and walk for extended or continuous periods

* Ability to quickly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with one's body, arms, and/or legs

* Ability to access work locations to mount signs

* Ability to tolerate heights while working

* Ability to operate applicable hand tools, power tools, and equipment

* Ability to climb staircases, ladders, and/or stepstools

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER WORK REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge Moderate knowledge of:



  • Applicable hand and power tools
  • Use of hanging equipment and materials
  • Use of safety equipment and protective gear


Some knowledge of:



  • Applicable safety rules specific to sign-hanging work, including OSHA standards
  • Geographical locations within the city and applicable facilities
  • Knowledge of applicable City and department policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
