About the Job

The goal of the Gill Lab at the University of Minnesota is to understand molecular mechanisms that underpin the basic biology of development and aging in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. The lab employs various genetic approaches, including CRISPR / Cas9 gene editing, forward and reverse genetics, RNASeq as well as life history trait analysis. Another focus is the development of drug screening approaches to identify compounds that influence lifespan in C. elegans.

In close association with the lab head, the Laboratory manager will be responsible for developing and maintaining institutional biosafety committee (IBC) compliance protocols, managing worm strains, conducting lab supply ordering, training of personnel in laboratory skills and biosafety protocol implementation. In addition to managing lab operations, the Lab Manager will also be involved in principal investigator-directed collaborative and independent research projects, including worm strain generation, collecting and analyzing data, writing results, contributing to written manuscripts and grants.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The distribution of effort between management and research may vary based on lab needs.

30% Lab Operations
* Maintain equipment, track inventory and order reagents related to general lab function and research projects.
* Ensure lab adherence to regulations, training requirements, perform duties as necessary for regulatory compliance.
* Manage lab resources including worm strains and plasmid collections
* Train personnel and undergraduates in laboratory and experimental techniques, record keeping practices and data analysis.

70% Research:
* Independently create and plan experiments based on knowledge and expertise in the field. Collect and complete analysis of data from experiments.
* Implement and optimize new C. elegans techniques and technologies.
* Generate transgenic and CRISPR edited C. elegans strains.
* Assist on collaborative projects as well as perform independent research.
* Implement SOPs for lifespan analysis and chemical screens.

Qualifications

Qualifications (must be on your resume)

Required:

* BA/BS degree plus five years or relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least nine years
* Demonstrated expertise in in vivo proteomic and genetic approaches to study E3 ubiquitin ligases in Caenorhabditis elegans
* Experience investigating novel heterochronic functions of the C. elegans period-related protein LIN-42.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently, make decisions, problem solve, and prioritize research efforts in line with research missions
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Excellent organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications:
* C. elegans biology including basic strain maintenance and phenotypic analysis
* Genetic crosses and epistasis analysis
* Generation of transgenic C. elegans by microinjection
* Design and implementation of CRISPR / Cas9 gene editing in C. elegans including deletions, epitope tagging and large insertions
* Molecular cloning
* Immunoprecipitation and co-immunoprecipitation of C. elegans proteins
* Fluorescence microscopy and image analysis of C. elegans, including but not limited to confocal microscopy
