Job Summary

The Principal Data Science / AI Product Manager in Genentech is responsible for driving the development and execution of cutting-edge AI/Machine Learning (ML) product features that elevate Genentech's customer experience and deliver measurable business impact. Focused on the Analytical Workbench-a flagship platform enabling scalable analytics and insight delivery-this role plays a critical part in advancing Genentech's digital transformation. This position partners closely with cross-functional teams and product leaders to shape digital-forward roadmaps, translate user feedback and market trends into actionable product enhancements, and build compelling business cases for innovation. With a strong focus on user-centric design and strategic foresight, this role leads the integration of AI/ML into enterprise platforms, identifies unmet customer needs, and ensures the Analytical Workbench evolves into a central enabler of fast, targeted decision-making.

The role also supports high-quality solution delivery through external team management, mentors peers to foster organizational expertise, and ensures seamless collaboration across business and technology functions for enterprise-wide success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive the overarching AI/ML product vision and strategy for the Analytical Workbench, leading the innovation of our AI/ML and analytics platform to support varying CMG use cases across the customer journey.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., Data Science, Data, Informatics/IT) and the Director, Analytical Workbench - Data Science/AI Product Owner to shape digital-forward product roadmaps and maintain a prioritized, stack-ranked product backlog for capabilities such as a data science/AI workbench, analytics co-pilot(s), coding assessments, and visualization tools.

  • Develop and own comprehensive AI/ML product roadmaps for the Analytical Workbench based on deep user research, market trends, business impact, and data insights-ensuring a differentiated and exceptional user experience.

  • Collect and analyze user feedback, market signals, platform data, and UAT results to inform product requirements and drive meaningful feature enhancements within the Analytical Workbench.

  • Provide a comprehensive set of tools for data scientists to perform their work throughout the AI/ML product lifecycle, enabling data exploration, preparation, model training, model evaluation, model validation, visualization, collaboration tools, and deployment.

  • Manage other AI applications that are used to drive and enable business use cases in a federated model across Genentech Commercial, Medical and Government Affairs (CMG); institute governance, standards, and best practices for the utilization of these AI applications.

  • Steward ethical AI guidelines, responsible AI principles, and fairness and bias mitigation process specific to Genentech Commercial, Medical, and Government Affairs (CMG).

  • Facilitate effective communication about the Analytical Workbench's value proposition and progress with internal teams and end users, ensuring alignment with both market demands and technical feasibility.

  • Partner closely with the Director, Analytical Workbench - Data Science / AI Product Owner to lead the development of business cases for integrating AI/ML into new and existing Analytical Workbench capabilities, aligned with Genentech's integrated customer experience transformation.

  • Identify and capitalize on unmet or unarticulated user needs by embedding AI/ML functionality into the Analytical Workbench, shaping enterprise strategy and accelerating digital transformation.

  • Manage external (US or offshore) consultants, ensuring delivery of high-quality, scalable solutions that align with platform architecture and user needs.

  • Orchestrate collaboration across business, IT, and enterprise product teams to ensure integrated execution, strong governance, and transformative outcomes across CMG.

  • Comply with all laws, regulations, and company policies that govern the conduct of Genentech activities.

Who You Are

Minimum Candidate Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or an equivalent technical field.

  • 8 years of combined experience in product management, data science, AI, software development or equivalent experience.

  • Experience owning the entire Data Science /AI product lifecycle-from ideation and strategy to market execution and postlaunch optimization-ensuring comprehensive governance and measurable business outcomes.

  • Proven experience in setting and driving the AI/ML product vision and strategy at an enterprise level, with a focus on transformative digital initiatives.

  • Demonstrated ability to engage, influence, and communicate with senior leaders and executive stakeholders.

  • Experience managing complex, multiunit product roadmaps and integrating AI/ML initiatives across varying business segments.

  • Solid background in leading highimpact experimentation efforts and using datadriven insights to continuously innovate product offerings.

  • Demonstrated experience researching AI/ML industry trends and integrating insights into product strategy and roadmaps.

  • Ability to write detailed, technical product specifications and present effectively to both technical and nontechnical audiences.

  • Strong understanding of agile methodologies such as Kanban and Scrum.

  • Ability to innovate and foster experimentation to improve product capabilities.

  • Robust knowledge of enterprise architectures and solutions (e.g., SaaS, PaaS, IaaS).

  • Relevant certifications in product management, machine learning, data science, or related disciplines.

Additional Desired Candidate Qualifications & Experience

  • Advanced degree or equivalent experience (e.g., MBA or related graduate-level qualification).

  • Experience in healthcare, pharmaceutical, or other highly regulated industries.

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and coach crossfunctional teams and to lead by example through a practice-based apprenticeship model.

  • Subject matter expertise in product management, with a history of innovating and transforming digital product capabilities.

  • Experience with tools and platforms used in citizen data science, automated analytics, and collaborative modeling environments.

  • Familiarity with performance monitoring, platform scalability strategies, and cost optimization.

  • Hands-on exposure to user research or design-thinking approaches to improve data tool usability and effectiveness.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $207,480 - $385,320. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
