Job Summary The Senior Director, Therapeutic Area Analytics & Insights - Respiratory (Resp) at Genentech is a visionary leader responsible for setting the strategic direction of analytics across Therapeutic Areas in Commercial, Medical, and Government Affairs (CMG). This role guides a multidisciplinary team of experts, leveraging core capabilities such as Market Research, Forecasting, Competitive Intelligence, Access, Data Analytics, Digital Measurement, Customer Insights, and Business Development. As a key advisor to the Senior Leaders, the Senior Director partners with senior cross-functional teams to shape long-term strategies, identify business development opportunities, drive data-informed decisions, and influence organizational outcomes related to revenue, investment, competitive strategy, and customer experience for in-line, pipeline, and business development assets in the Therapeutic Area. This position champions innovation, prioritizes portfolio initiatives, and ensures that customized business needs are balanced with scalable, standardized solutions across the organization. Key Responsibilities Drive critical business decisions as a direct strategic advisor and thought partner to Genentech senior leadership across Commercial Portfolio, Squad, US Medical, Global Product Strategy (GPS), CEO/US Leadership Team members, Public Affairs & Access, and Partnering leadership by creating integrated insights and making recommendations, either directly or through the Senior Director's:
Serve as primary analytics and insights advisor to Therapeutic Area Leadership and guide and influence leadership to make data-driven decisions and develop data-driven strategies and tactics. Advise Therapeutic Area and CMG leadership to develop short- and long-term vision. Shape near-term Therapeutic Area priorities for Respiratory rooted in the patient and provider experience and outcomes. Enable action and bring focus to drive and execute on Therapeutic Area strategy and priorities. Build strong relationships with senior business leaders to drive seamless collaboration across functions. Influence Pipeline decision-making and Business Development activities within Respiratory, working with Global teams to support the representation of US perspective. Support the shaping of vision and strategy for Competitive and Customer Insights, ensuring alignment with CMG's 5-year capability plan and positioning the team to deliver maximum business impact. Translate this strategic vision into actionable insights that support decision-making across therapeutic areas and business functions. Design and conduct digital analytics and performance measurement to generate insights that inform strategy. Advise and converse fluently with VPs and SVPs, including Squad Leads, Customer Engagement Leadership, USLT, and Global Therapeutic Area leaders, as a formal member of the Squad. Scaffold a unified, coordinated, standardized service approach to business development opportunity assessments, including serving as the primary bridge for Respiratory to GPS and partnering when there is a need to triage work to appropriate Squad.
Continuously craft and advance a compelling vision and strategic plan for a multi-disciplinary Therapeutic Area team while serving as a critical member of the Data, Digital, and Analytics Team:
Translate Respiratory Therapeutic Area and Commercial priorities into the workplan. Prioritize highest impact work and assess plans regularly to adjust accordingly. Connect the dots across disparate workstreams between the US and Global. Be an enterprise steward and communicate rationale for tradeoffs. Innovate analytical methods and shape capabilities while identifying areas for automating and standardizing for scale across the portfolio or for shift of work into an Analytic Product. Continuously adapt competitive and customer insight capabilities to meet evolving business needs, incorporating state-of-the-art methodologies and embedding insights-driven decision-making into business processes across CMG. Catalyze and entrench new solutions, analytical products, and ways of working into the business, reinforcing a culture of insights-driven strategies. Champion adoption for analytical products where Therapeutic Area Analytics & Insights is the end user. Partner and collaborate closely with the Business Product Owner(s) and Activation Lead(s) to ensure the team integrates products into their workflows and provides productive feedback to achieve adoption measures and utilization. Continuously improve efficiency, managing expenses and budgets. Proactively sense Therapeutic Area business needs and shape new priorities for the future. Stay abreast of internal and external trends and ensure the same among their team to evolve the team's work as necessary to stay current and relevant to the business. Demonstrate a strategic, agile and customer-centric mindset to achieving business objectives. Contribute to continuous organizational improvement by sharing best practices, identifying opportunities for automation, and enhancing the efficiency and impact of analytic workflows.
Build, coach, and lead high-performing, multi-disciplinary team across capabilities, levels, and geographies:
Proactively identify and address dynamic resourcing needs and the right mix of people, including offshore resources, while adopting talent flow. Supervise and guide analysts of various expertise levels and areas across Market Research, Forecasting, Competitive Intelligence, Access, Data Analytics, Digital Measurement, Customer Insights, and Business Development. Actively lead the community of practice through sponsoring initiatives, setting strategic directions, and empowering others to engage and innovate, thereby elevating the community's impact and reach. Hire, develop, and retain great talent. Coach and empower team to be effective strategic thought partners. Cultivate inclusive and outcome driven culture. Ensure the team adheres to compliance standards and maintains Genentech/Roche's license to operate & comply with all laws, regulations and policies that govern the conduct of Genentech activities.
Enable and embed breadth of strategic portfolio initiatives at the Therapeutic Area business level:
Develop and strengthen capabilities that support portfolio initiatives and tie them to business needs. Support leadership in planning, organizing, and implementing strategies that drive business development initiatives, ensuring effective execution and alignment with organizational priorities. Embed initiatives and drive prioritization in alignment with Therapeutic Area and Commercial priorities while automating and standardizing analytics. Share learnings with Therapeutic Area and Commercial leaders to shape initiatives.
Who You Are Minimum Candidate Qualifications & Experience
10 years work experience, including 7 years in Pharma, Management Consulting, or Analytical Insights. 6 years leading, coaching or mentoring talent. Bachelor's degree in a relevant field. Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence senior leaders. Strong results orientation and adaptability to a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated ability to lead through ambiguity and manage and inspire change. Experience managing budgets and resources to drive business growth and innovation. Expert knowledge and deep understanding of therapeutic area dynamics and how to apply analytical capabilities to drive the Therapeutic Area business.
Additional Desired Candidate Qualifications & Experience:
Preferred degree in Business, Economics, Engineering, Statistics, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Computer or Physical Sciences or related field. MBA/graduate degree preferred. Expertise in chronic respiratory diseases, with analytics & insights experience in asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and/or lung diseases. Familiarity with the respiratory care continuum, including inhalation therapies, biologics, and current treatment guidelines. Expertise in competitive and customer insights, with experience guiding strategies across commercial teams. Expertise in business development insights, with experience guiding strategies across pipeline development, market access, and therapeutic areas. Proven track record of leadership, time-management, project management, and teamwork. Persuasive written and verbal communication skills. Strong attention to detail. Experience synthesizing concise summaries focused on the key insights that inform business decisions. Proficiency in understanding market landscape and surfacing insights across multiple primary and secondary data sources. Comfortable dealing with uncertainty in a highly-matrixed organization. Strong results orientation and adaptability in a fast-paced environment. Strong ability to explore large amounts of data, identify important insights and build compelling narratives. Highly proficient with data analytics tools (Excel, SQL, etc). Exposure to pharmaceutical product development and/or commercialization. Expertise in designing and fielding qualitative and quantitative primary market research plans. Experience working with analytical tools (e.g., Python, R, and SQL). Experience with revenue forecasting, including patient-flow methods, patient funnels, account-based forecasting, trend-based forecasting (short and long-term), statistical methods, and uncertainty analysis. Experience building and improving forecasting models. Experience with competitive intelligence experience and guiding strategies across commercial teams. Experience with customer insights and guiding strategies across commercial teams. Experience solving access issues across a wide range of products, therapeutic areas, and challenges, with limited guidance, insights, or resources. Able to design and conduct digital analytics/measurements.
Location
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $210,350 - 390,650. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
