The primary support area and preferred office location is within the OH/KY service area. However, other locations within the Duke Energy Midwest region will be considered.

Position Summary:

The Region Engineer serves as the single point of contact for outage and misoperations support associated with substation, relay, balance of station, and line equipment. This function provides the second level of technical support beyond the field crews and Construction, Maintenance, and Vegetation (CMV) Supervisors. The Region Engineer serves as a conduit between CMV, Engineering, and Asset Management to provide expertise as deemed necessary. Region Engineer support may require interface with the following organizations, as a minimum:

  • Craft Workforce (Maintenance, Construction, and Relay)

  • Project Management

  • Work Management

  • Transmission Engineering (P&C, Substation, and Line)

  • ECC/DCC personnel

  • Other Asset Management Personnel (System Standards, Equipment Engineering, Transmission and Substation Performance, Data Management, and System Intelligence)

  • Transmission Planning

  • Distribution Engineering

  • Generation Plants and System Engineers

  • Large Account Managers (LAM) for external customers (e.g., industrial, commercial, and Electric Municipalities Corporations)

  • Wholesale Customers (WVPA, IMPA, Hoosier, Buckeye, etc.)

Job Responsibilities:

Primary roles and responsibilities of the Region Engineer include:

  • Supports mobile substation installations as needed

  • Leads or participates in Root Cause Investigations (ie. RCA, ACA, BCA)

  • Serves as point of contact for outages and equipment mis operations

  • Provides outage analysis, documentation, and follow-up. Depending on complexity, the Region Engineer may request support from the appropriate SME. The Region Engineer is responsible for follow-up, assigning and tracking of Corrective Actions, and completion of 228 reports. Including reporting significant events in Plant view. (1M CMI corrective actions being tracked by Op Excellence.)

  • Provides input on scope and collaborates with project teams on Transmission construction projects.

  • Provides equipment troubleshooting and problem resolution. (Includes unique equipment such as SVC, UG)

  • Represent Duke Energy as a technical expert for escalated customer outage and service quality issues. (e.g., power quality, reliability, and capacity).

  • Serves as technical point of contact with regional distribution engineering for contingency load planning, emergencies, and outages

  • Supports plant outages or specific plant projects by serving as plant interface for Asset Management

  • Assists System Performance in the evaluation of performance and reliability of Transmission assets in assigned region. Identifies and mitigates system issues and/or equipment issues that may impact system reliability and submits project work accordingly for assigned area.

  • Supports Project Manager on emergent/failed equipment projects (scope and estimates)

  • Assists with prioritizing scoring of one-off reliability projects, to be placed in long range planning tool (Copperleaf), that are not covered under system programs or other projects.

  • Prepare major outage (>1 million CMI) presentations and facilitate discussion with transmission leadership to review events for best practices and lessons learned.

  • Lead effort to determine whether to repair versus replace equipment.

  • Provide support for corrective maintenance including priority and risk evaluation as necessary.

Secondary roles and responsibilities of the Region Engineer include:

  • Works with System Intelligence to provide health evaluations and interpretation of equipment test results and trending. If further expertise is needed, the Region Engineer may contact the appropriate SME.

  • Supports equipment commissioning.

  • Provides feedback to the appropriate Engineering organization on first-time equipment deployment

  • Supports Equipment Strategy with making changes to proactive maintenance tasks to mitigate recurring problems and potential failures.

  • Assists Equipment Strategy in developing maintenance PM priorities

  • Serves on Duke Energy teams to provide asset-related experience and knowledge. (ie. AMET)

  • Assists in providing guidance on job plans and procedures

  • Assists SMEs with performing substation, mobile (portable), and equipment condition assessments

  • Works with System Intelligence and Equipment SME to Support and analyze Condition Based Monitoring equipment, as well as Health Risk Management tool and other data analytic tools.

  • Provide C&M with ArcFlash calculations when requested (supports Relay SME), as applicable.

  • Provide input and guidance to the Claims Department for damage claims related to transmission events.

  • Provide third level of support after C&M Supervisor and TSS with grounding work method interpretations, as applicable.

Note: this position may be filled as an Engineer II or one level up as an Engineer III depending upon the selected candidate's experience.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Engineer II:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • 2 years of minimum required related experience

  • A Master of Science Degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Engineer III:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • 4 years of minimum required related experience

  • A Master of Science Degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Increasingly proficient in principles of project management.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.

  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.

  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE)

  • Expert working knowledge of the transmission system and associated safety policies, practices, and work procedures.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.

  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.

Working Conditions

  • Field Mobility Classification - Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.

Specific Requirements

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
