Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for a Senior or Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join our dams engineering and dam safety practice in one of our offices in California, including Los Angeles and Davis (Geosyntec has additional offices throughout southern and northern California). This position is well-suited for a talented, highly experienced individual who is interested in contributing to innovative and challenging projects involving dams and appurtenant works, tailings impoundments, levees and flood control infrastructure, dam/levee safety risk and risk-informed decision making, and geotechnical analysis and design for a range of critical infrastructure. This role will allow you to serve in a key leadership role to build out our geotechnical engineering capabilities, leveraging existing staff resources and collaborating with other senior dam practitioners across the firm. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the growth of our national dams and levees engineering practice.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Managing projects successfully to achieve goals for technical excellence, budget control, schedule compliance, quality, client satisfaction, and profitability;
  • Support broadening our practice through recruiting, team development, and mentorship;
  • Evaluation of geotechnical aspects of projects consisting of earthen embankments and related infrastructure;
  • Performing risk analysis, risk-informed decision making, and other aspects of risk practice for dams and related infrastructure;
  • Providing geotechnical site characterization and evaluation;
  • Conducting fieldwork and overnight travel (e.g., site inspections for dams);
  • Reviewing and managing written document production; and
  • Business development; including supporting/leading/bringing in new clients and obtaining repeat business from existing clients, leading proposal preparation, and developing and implementing a business development plan; and Staff management and mentoring.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities including technical conferences, in-house seminars, webinars, and mentoring, that allow our professionals to build the technical and business skills necessary to become successful consultants.


Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor's degree in civil, geotechnical, geological engineering or related field. (required)
  • Advanced degree in the same. (preferred)
  • Professional registration (i.e., P.E.). (preferred)


Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 8 years (10+ years preferred) of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. (required)
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary project teams. (required)
  • Experience with project management and business development (required)
  • Excellent leadership and detail orientation skills. (required)
  • Knowledge of and experience with the geotechnical design and dams practice in the Region. (required)
  • Knowledge of Risk-Informed-Decision-Making methodologies such as USACE, FERC, and Reclamation. (preferred)
  • Ability and willingness to perform fieldwork and travel for site visits, inspections, and other business-related meetings or conferences. (required)
  • Excellent writing and communication skills. (required)
  • Experience with modeling/design tools such as AUTOCAD, Slope/W, Sigma/W, FLAC, and ARCGIS. (preferred)
  • Regional visibility through involvement in professional associations or trade organizations. (preferred)
  • Valid U.S. driver's license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)

This opportunity will be posted for at least five days. Below are the potential compensation ranges that we in good faith believe are applicable for this role at the time of this posting and are only applicable for jobs to be performed in the specified location(s) below. The typical base salary range for this position is just one component of Geosyntec's total compensation package for employees. Actual compensation will be determined based on education, experience, skill set and location.

  • Minimum Salary: $130,280/year / Maximum Salary: $205,190/year (Los Angeles)
  • Minimum Salary: $124,620/year / Maximum Salary: $196,275/year (Davis)
