Job Purpose

The primary responsibility of this role is to underwrite consumer loan applications originating from both the branch and dealer networks. Will be expected to complete sound analysis of an applicant's financial, credit, work and employment history to arrive at well-supported loan decisions that adhere to Bank and regulatory policies and guidelines. Will routinely interface with retail banking associates and dealer financing personnel to develop and discuss pending credit applications. Will assist in the on-going training of consumer loan principles to new personal bankers. Will collaborate with the Collection Department in the evaluation of loan workout and loan extension requests.

Job Duties:

  • Will be responsible for underwriting a high volume of consumer loan applications originating from both the branch and dealer networks assisted by an automated underwriting system. Will resolve any questions or gain clarification to render an accurate credit decision.
  • Evaluate applicant characteristics including but not limited to financial condition, credit report, employment history, residence history and collateral in arriving at an objective and decisive credit decision.
  • Will analyze consumer financial documents or tax returns as necessary to establish ability to repay.
  • Will be responsible for approving loans within established authority and evaluate mitigating factors when recommending an approval on loans with policy exceptions.
  • Maintain a complete knowledge of internal and external policies and regulations impacting the consumer lending business.
  • Collaborate with the Collection Department in the evaluation and underwriting of loan modification and extension requests from existing consumer loan customers.
  • Provide training as necessary to retail branch or dealer finance staff as necessary to improve comprehension of bank guidelines and lending process.
  • Preparing or analyzing production reports as necessary.
  • Perform industry or market research as needed to understand relative competitiveness of price, product and process.
  • Complete letter of guarantee requests for totaled vehicles. Provide timely correspondence to insurance carriers to help process claims.
  • Will provide follow up on title lien filings and Compliance and Patriot Act exceptions.
  • Will provide excellent, accurate and professional service to internal and external customers.
  • Help mentor & train new hires to department standards & procedures.
  • Will perform special projects as assigned.

Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 7:00 pm and Saturday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Education, Job Skills and Qualifications:

  • Associates degree or equivalent work experience required. Bachelor's degree in business or finance preferred.
  • Consumer or residential loan underwriting experience, familiarity with automated underwriting systems preferred. Objective and decisive decision-making is essential.
  • Experience analyzing individual financial statements or tax returns.
  • Proven experience interfacing with internal or external clients. Must be able to communicate loan requirements, position questions and listen effectively.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented production environment.
  • Positive, customer-focused, outgoing, team-oriented individual with analytical skills.
  • Must have proven negotiation, problem resolution and conflict management skills.
  • Working knowledge of general software products such as Word and Excel.
  • Understanding or familiarity with key regulations governing the business including but not limited to Regulation B, Regulation Z, Fair Credit Reporting Act etc.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Associates degree or equivalent work experience required.
