For one year, get paid to build sustainable solutions in a community, gain valuable hands-on experience and prepare for your future. This full-time AmeriCorps service position offers a great opportunity to make a real impact in the lives of others while building your own knowledge and skillset.

AmeriCorps National members serve the community in direct service and capacity building activities.

What will you do?


The Construction Crew Leader plays an integral part in building and repairing homes. Lead groups of skilled and unskilled volunteers and homeowner families in construction activities while maintaining a safe, efficient work environment, thus, developing and enhancing your volunteer management and construction skills.

  • Typically serve Tuesday - Saturday on the build site.
  • Assist with all aspects of hands-on construction tasks including, but not limited to, demolition, site prep, framing, insulation, drywall, flooring, roofing, finish carpentry and landscaping.
  • Projects may include new construction, rehabilitation, critical home repair and weatherization projects.
  • Lead small groups of volunteers and facilitate safe and positive experiences for everyone working on site.
  • Maintain site safety by adhering to Habitat construction safety policies, modeling best practices and guidelines, volunteer education and site monitoring.

This position will focus on home construction aspects of Habitat affiliate operations.

  • Activities and attractions: Located on the edge of national forest and BLM land and only a 30-minute drive to the Cascade Mountain range with lakes and rivers everywhere, the Bend/Redmond area in Central Oregon is known as a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. We have easy access to skiing/snowboarding, snowshoeing, mountain biking, road biking, rock climbing, mountain climbing, running trails, hiking trails, kayaking, paddle boarding, rafting, camping, backpacking, fishing, hunting, and pretty much anything under the sun. We even have a surf wave on the Deschutes River. Bend and Redmond are also central to all the amazing places the rest of Oregon has to offer such as Crater Lake, the Oregon Coast, Smith Rock, the Hood River Gorge, the Painted Hills, John Day Fossil Beds, Steens Mountain, and much more! If you enjoy the outdoors, Central Oregon is the place for you.
  • Unique projects: Bend-Redmond Habitat for Humanity Construction Crew Leaders will have the opportunity to complete one sustainable-building development and final phase of the second, with a total of 27 housing units, during the 2025-2026 AmeriCorps service year. Through participating in these projects, members will learn about sustainable building best practices as well as our process of identifying a holistic approach that meets our budgets while accomplishing our sustainability goals: to be net-zero and receive Green Building certification. Members will also acquire hands-on experience in our preferred methods for insulation, air sealing, weather protection, and HVAC systems. They will also learn about how sustainable building practices can increase the longevity of a home, improve the health of its residents, provide important cost savings, and reduce the overall impact to our community's infrastructure and resources. Bend-Redmond Habitat for Humanity now has a dedicated fund for sustainable building measures, and we are committed to providing solar panels for all new housing units with the goal of net-zero energy use. We are proud of the homes we build, and we are proud to show how energy-efficient healthy homes can be built cost effectively while maintaining high quality.
In our sustainability efforts, Bend-Redmond Habitat for Humanity partners with Earth Advantage, local solar installers, The Environmental Center, and other local organizations dedicated to building sustainably in Central Oregon. Our Construction Crew Leaders will have the opportunity to participate in their associated events such as the Green Building Tour, the Earth Day celebration, and Central Oregon Zero-Energy Enthusiasts networking sessions, as well as having access to their free online training. Members will also have the opportunity to help educate our community partners at home dedications, fundraising events, and our Women Build Week event in the spring.

When will you serve?

Start dates are flexible and based on this location's availability. Talk to the hiring manager for this position about start dates during your interview process. The start date will be 4-6 weeks from receiving an offer and no earlier than August 2025.

  • Living allowance of $20,400 for approximately 10 months of service.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident at least 18 or older and have a high school diploma or GED.
