Description

Note: APA operates on a 37.5-hour work week with one hour lunch breaks each day. APA sets salaries based on several considerations, including years of relevant experience, level of education, and previous staff and/or governance experience at APA.

The purpose of this job is to carry out the mission of the American Psychological Association - "to promote the advancement, communication, and application of psychological science and knowledge to the benefit society and improve lives-by advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility at APA. Under the direction of the Chief Diversity Officer, the Deputy Chief Diversity Officer (Deputy Chief) is responsible for providing strategic leadership, managing and operationalizing APA's goal to integrate EDI across the organization and within the field of psychology.

This role manages APA's overall EDI strategy and supervises a team responsible for the implementation, dissemination, and evaluation of APA's EDI strategy and long-term coordinated plan to dismantle systemic inequities.

This role is also expected to coordinate with APA staff (including, but not limited to HR, SWEO, OGC, etc.) to determine how best to identify priorities and coordinate organizational support particularly with efforts that promote an equitable, diverse, and inclusive work environment within APA staff and the association. The Deputy Chief will champion thought leadership, innovation, and excellence to build innovative models that may serve as exemplars for using EDI principles as foundational to fostering psychologically healthy workplaces.

This role is time-limited position with an end date of December 31, 2025.

Education and Experience Required



  • The minimum educational requirement is a master's degree or Doctoral Degree in Psychology or Public Health, equity, diversity and inclusion or a related field.
  • 10-15 years demonstrated success in equity, diversity, and inclusion program design, development, management, measurement, and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, cross-functional partnership development, and/or change management within complex institutional settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and collaborate with individuals or groups responsible for guiding, driving, and implementing equity, diversity, and inclusion strategies.
  • Demonstrated proactive approach and ability to influence, build relationships and communicate at all levels.
  • Ability to think strategically and translate business needs into concrete action plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a matrixed approach to research, identify and work towards implementation of best practices of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Strong change management, customer service, analytical, organizational, problem-solving, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Analytical mindset and learning agility to quickly synthesize complex data sets, reports, and situational context to drive action and results.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


Computer Skills Required

Microsoft and all its products (Advanced User) with proficiency in Microsoft Suite. Experience with virtual meeting technology preferred (e.g., Zoom).

Responsibilities



  • Lead and collaborate across APA to advance a new, science-based EDI Framework grounded in human rights principles and diversity science, by developing, coordinating, and implementing strategic priorities, decision-making structures, and organization-wide actions to embed equity, diversity, and inclusion at all levels of the Association.
  • Spearhead APA's long-term coordinated strategy towards dismantling racism through the development, implementation, and dissemination of APA's Racial Equity Plan.
    Pilot structures and implement scalable solutions that build the capacity of the organization with the intention of strengthening APA and its work
  • Enable staff to pursue a shared vision for EDI by providing guidance, education, and resources to APA units, directorates, and members, including the delivery of learning experiences and tools to support the Chief Diversity Officer and influence throughout APA.
    Provide oversight on engagement strategies that aim to increase association-wide participation, coordination, and alignment to APA EDI vision.
  • Provide oversight on the expansion of innovative methods for assessing the impact of EDI and all related roadmaps to build equity throughout the organization. The deputy will monitor and showcase organizational performance (e.g., tracking metrics and outcomes) and accountability through the development of organization-wide annual reports.
  • Work in collaboration with APA directorates to address EDI-related challenges that extend beyond the boundaries of the EDI Executive Office.
  • Champion the use of innovation to develop broad-based and need-specific approaches that are responsive to critical societal issues faced by marginalized groups throughout society (e.g., issues faced by LGBTQ+ communities, disability inclusion, students of color, organizations focused on advancing racial equity, etc.).
  • Represent CDO in meetings as needed
  • Conduct ongoing research on best practices and recommend strategies for continuous improvement of EDI initiatives.


Other Duties as Assigned:



  • Engage in a variety of other activities that serve to promote the goals and objectives of APA.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CDO.
