Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).


General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Senior Land Management Consultant is responsible for leading the management and preservation of Consumer's owned property and easement rights to support management of all land activities. The primary focus of this position will be utility property rights with support to renewable property as well as managing semi-complex Real Estate transactions which include research, analyzing and interpreting property rights, negotiating terms and conditions of real estate contracts, and the resolution of encroachments. Resolving highly complex property right issues, recognizing, understanding, and evaluating business risk as part of the decision-making process. Communicating with internal stakeholders and external customers and prioritize requests and workload associated with the Real Estate Asset Management team and may serve as the primary interface between the regulatory agencies, external customers and internal stakeholders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads and manages mid to high-level projects such as infrastructure installation, replacement and site modifications, and community enhancement requests which may come from direct sales of property, easement grants, leases and licensing, all while providing expert support to internal and external clients. Ensure alignment in assessing needs and implementing processes and procedures to enhance client and customer experiences. Develop and execute comprehensive asset management strategies. Collaborate with operations, engineering, and forestry teams, and maintain direct customer interactions.
  • Collaborates in the development and execution of team strategy, goals and priorities in support of multiple work streams. Strategies focused on optimizing value to the department and liaison to internal and external customers, supporting multiple work streams.
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary
  • Leads and manages the oversight and implementation of land management plans and real estate transactions by inspecting, researching, analyzing and interpreting property rights, negotiating terms and conditions of real estate contracts. Resolves highly complex property right issues, recognizing, understanding and evaluating business risk as part of the decision-making process and resolves encroachments and encumbrances. May include oversight and implementation of FERC required land management plans, as determined by location.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of Real Estate property rights/interests, strategies and concepts used to generate sound business decisions and project outcomes.
  • Knowledge of complex contracts/agreements and other legal documents, including real estate law and transaction experience.
  • Ability to communicate internally and externally at multiple levels across the organization, including senior management.
  • Ability to read and interpret real estate documents and legal descriptions which allow for critical business decisions.
  • Analytical Thinker/Problem Solving Skills - Ability to identify key transaction elements, understand potential impacts and develop sound solutions.
  • Action Oriented - Ability to quickly analyze and move to resolution to meet project deadlines.

Experience & Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Land Management, or Natural resources with4 years in technical experience. History and knowledge of working in specific field as described above [OR]
  • Associate's Degree in Business, Land Management, or Natural resources with 6years in technical experience. History and knowledge of working in specific field as described above [OR]
  • High School Diploma or GED with 8 years in technical experience. History and knowledge of working in specific field as described above
