OVERVIEW

The Safariland Group is seeking a self-motivated, detail oriented, creative Engineering Intern to join their Commercial & Duty Gear Engineering Team. This small dynamic team of Product Designers, Mechanical Engineers, Tool Design Engineers, manufacturing and design technicians, CNC operators, and engineering coordinators is responsible for designing, developing, and launching new products while providing Production teams with engineering support for current product lines as needed. The product family focuses on a line of handgun holsters, associated mounting accessories and related gear for the commercial, shooting, hunting, outdoor, and/or law enforcement customers which are produced by or in combination of injection molded, thermoformed, and/or leather worked manufacturing processes.

RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Setup and perform mechanical tests and generate detailed reports
  • Assist in the creation of detailed 3D Solidworks CAD models of part designs to meet functional requirements with sufficient detail and accuracy to be produced by the intended manufacturing process.
  • Assist in the creation of 3D Solidworks CAD model assemblies, with relatively low component count to aid in part design and verify fit and functional requirements.
  • Assist in the creation of 2D detailed engineering drawings of 3D CAD models using Solidworks.
  • Collaborate on preliminary Solidworks FEA or Plastics analysis to simulate functional requirements or identify any manufacturing concerns for plastic parts (i.e. wall thickness, flow, warpage, sinkage, draft, and undercut).
  • Using internal equipment (i.e. 3D printers, CNCs, mills, lathes, sewing machines, or thermoforming equipment) complete and/or coordinate fabrication of prototype parts and assemblies for design evaluation and testing.
  • Assist with design and fabrication of any new assembly fixtures required for Production.
  • Inspect first article molded or purchased parts and test run assembly samples
  • Produce internal QC reference drawings, assembly aids or work instructions in accordance with internal documentation guidelines.



QUALIFICATIONS



  • Currently enrolled, BS degree seeking student in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or Industrial Design.
  • Fundamental CAD modeling ability with 3D design software, Solidworks preferred.
  • Knowledge of creating 2D engineering detail drawings.
  • Familiarity with engineering measuring tools or gauges to accurately reverse engineer and create CAD models of physical parts when needed
  • Ability to build functional prototypes using provided parts and equipment.
  • Fundamental experience and comfortable working with hand tools (i.e. drills, drivers, Dremel tools, wrenches, etc.) for prototype assembly is required.
  • Basic knowledge of 3D printers, scanners, desktop CNC's, and other manufacturing equipment (i.e. mills, lathes, saws, sanders, buffers, sewing machines, etc.) is a bonus.
  • Basic knowledge of handguns, functional mechanisms, related accessories, and holsters is a plus.
  • Verbal Communication


    • Ability to follow directions and ask questions as they arise to maintain project momentum.
    • Understand and relay general project status information in meetings and one-on-one conversations in an accurate and detailed manner.
    • Ability to collaborate in a team environment.


  • Written Communication


    • Basic knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
    • Able to read and interpret written instructions provided.
    • Ability to read and convert information into drawings, prints or sketches.
    • Presents information efficiently and supporting numerical data effectively

    • Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner
    • Gathers and analyzes information skillfully
    • Works well in group problem solving situations
    • Uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics


  • Schedule


    • Hours are flexible, between 7am and 6pm.
    • 20 hours per week minimum is preferred.
