The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is an award-winning, independent, global, nonprofit research organization that provides data-driven analysis to advance policies that reduce the health and environmental impacts of the transportation sector. The ICCT offers a mission-driven and culturally diverse workplace where intelligence, flexibility, transparency, and good humor are highly valued. Join our team of more than 140 talented researchers and support staff with offices in Beijing, Berlin, New Delhi, San Francisco, Sao Paulo, and Washington DC.

The ICCT seeks a versatile Editor/Writer to join a team that works across all programs and regions to ensure the integrity and quality of the research publications that are at the core of our work. In addition, about one-third of this Editor/Writer's time will be dedicated to writing and editing other funder- and public-facing organizational materials (e.g., reports, grant proposals, digital copy, presentations, promotional materials) in coordination with the Development Team. This multifaceted role is ideal for an experienced editor with a careful eye for detail, a knack for storytelling, and a demonstrated knowledge of climate science, environmental policy, or transportation. A graduate degree in a relevant field is preferred, as is some experience with peer-reviewed publishing.

The Editor/Writer will primarily handle a stream of editing assignments. A typical day could involve developmentally editing a brief about global maritime regulations in the morning and then copy editing a long technical report about biofuels in Brazil in the afternoon. Duties range from advising on the logic and structure of research reports to writing and editing summaries for grant proposals and reviewing social media posts. This is a full-time position that can be based out of our Washington, DC or San Francisco offices. There is ample opportunity to work remotely and you will report to the Managing Editor.

You will

  • Review and edit a diverse range of written materials, including but not limited to reports, policy briefs, blog posts, fact sheets, and press releases. Identify and help resolve possible editorial issues, including inconsistencies of argumentation, methodology, development, or organization. Reorganize and rewrite as necessary and negotiate revisions with authors.

  • Handle a continuous stream of editing assignments on a broad range of production timelines. While most ICCT research products are developed on longer timelines, Editor/Writers occasionally work under tight deadlines.

  • Identify and surface the behind-the-scenes value of the ICCT's work and highlight policy achievements and impact in organizational reports, promotional materials, presentations, and digital copy.

  • Coordinate with the Development Team to produce and review materials for funders including grant proposals and end-of-year reports.

  • Work with researchers to identify research and writing projects that support the ICCT's strategic goals and translate long-form pieces into briefs, blog posts, op-eds, and other accessible communications products that suit policy objectives.

  • Help build and manage relationships between researchers in various programs and regions and the Communications and Development Teams.
  • Uphold the ICCT's style and quality standards in print and digital products.

You Have

  • A graduate degree in environmental science, climate change/sustainability, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

  • 3+ years of experience writing and editing according to professional style guidelines such as APA, Chicago Manual, GPO, etc. (APA experience is a plus.)

  • Experience writing and editing scientific papers or policy documents (experience with
environmental or transportation policy is a plus).

  • Ability to understand and synthesize technical information and translate it for multiple audiences differentiated across platforms, including grant proposals and reports and promotional materials.

  • Attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Ability to work in multiple software platforms and learn new applications quickly. The ICCT is a Mac environment and we use the Microsoft Office Suite of products and Asana, among other programs.

  • Knowledge of the transportation sector and issues related to clean transportation is a plus.
