Major/Essential Functions

Performs specialized work in the planning, and conducting cell, molecular and animal experimentation, training students and other lab members, at the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM), under the supervision of a faculty. Responsible for participating in, planning, scheduling and/or supervising lab activities, and overseeing lab safety and compliance with EHS guidelines and policies. Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of project

  • Supports SVM faculty in managing the lab, training students and other lab members
  • Performs cell, molecular and animal experiments, and reports to an SVM faculty. Performs specialized work in planning, coordinating, and conducting research.
  • Oversee lab safety and operations consistent with EHS and OLAC/IACUC guidelines and policies. Provides oversight, and coordination of lab operations,
  • Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness in supporting faculty research.
  • Other essential job functions and duties listed below and include:
  • Develop standard of operating procedures (SOP) for the laboratory in cell, molecular and animal experimentation
  • Optimize and develop new protocols as needed
  • Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness in supporting lab research
  • Complete other program-related duties, as assigned.
  • Oversee organization of specimens, reagents and materials, compile and maintain laboratory's databases and inventories, manage the procurement of supplies, and vendor relationships
  • Develop relevant methods and conduct gene, protein and metabolite analyses.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and its usage
  • Manage all lab animal studies for ongoing research projects and assist with animal experimentations and relevant technique development, including keep up of instruments used and timelines
  • Provide regular reports to the supervising faculty on lab operations and management
  • Assist the faculty in training and co-mentoring students and other lab members, as needed withing SVM
  • Oversee lab safety and operations
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and its usage and coordinate usage of SVM core facility equipment use for lab members

Required Qualifications

Master's degree; four years of job-related experience. Additional job-related education may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications


  • 2 or more years as a research technician or lab manager.
  • Knowledge of cell, molecular, and animal experimentation
  • Knowledge and experience with laboratory practices, methods, resources, and standard operating procedures, EHS protocols, IACUC protocols
  • Computer software knowledge (Excel, Word, ppt, etc).
  • Ability to work in an environment handling biological samples, and animals
  • Competence in reading literature, especially experimental protocols and developing and standardizing lab protocols.
  • Training students

Pay Statement
