Job Description
The Technical Manager will lead the IT Research Support Solutions (ITRSS) team responsible for managing the university's High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure and research storage infrastructure at Missouri S&T in Rolla. This position will oversee the planning, deployment, and maintenance of HPC clusters, storage, and networking systems, while ensuring that services meet the evolving needs of the university's research community. The Technical Manager will provide strategic direction for the HPC environment, collaborate with researchers and campus IT leadership, and guide the HPC system administrators in delivering secure, efficient, and reliable computational resources. This role requires hands-on technical expertise with HPC technologies and strong leadership skills to foster a collaborative, customer-focused team culture. Basic Function & Responsibilities: Demonstrate a high level of initiative, independence, and maturity in all aspects of work; use creative and critical thinking techniques to identify and implement new or novel ways to improve services and service delivery and demonstrate effective delegation skills when applicable. Contribute to the successful completion of assignments and projects through providing technical direction, balancing team workload, budgetary planning, etc. Due to the restricted research projects this position will work with, individuals in this position must be eligible to receive export-controlled information. VISA sponsorships are not available for this position. Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership & Management
- Lead, mentor, and manage the HPC system administration team, providing technical guidance, performance evaluations, and professional development opportunities
- Oversee daily operations of the HPC environment, ensuring reliability, security, and optimal performance of cluster computing, storage, and networking resources
- Collaborate with faculty, researchers, and IT leadership to align HPC services with institutional research objectives and emerging computational needs
- Develop and manage budgets, resource allocation, and capacity planning for HPC infrastructure and services
- Ensure adherence to security best practices, compliance standards, and institutional policies for research data handling
- Technical Oversight & Expertise:
- Provide technical leadership by staying current with advancements in HPC hardware, software, and scientific computing technologies
- Participate in high-level system architecture decisions, ensuring scalability, efficiency, and maintainability of HPC infrastructure
- Guide the team in installing, configuring, and maintaining Linux clusters and related scientific software, ensuring performance optimization and stability
- Oversee the troubleshooting and resolution of complex hardware, software, and network issues
- Evaluate and implement new technologies and services to enhance the HPC environment's capabilities
- Ensure proper monitoring and logging of system performance, availability, and security incidents
- Collaboration & Outreach
- Serve as the primary liaison to researchers, providing technical consultation on HPC-related needs for sponsored projects
- Collaborate with IT security teams to ensure the integrity and security of the HPC infrastructure
- Develop and deliver training sessions and documentation for faculty, staff, and students on HPC and Storage resources and best practices
- Represent the RSS team in institutional and external collaborations, including conferences and technical forums
- Collaborate with faculty and other IT groups if necessary to provide support for grant proposals and awards
Shift
- This position is primarily based in Rolla, Missouri, with occasional travel to partner campuses across the state.
- Hybrid flexibility is available, but frequent on-campus presence is required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
- 2+ years of experience in high-performance computing
- Expertise in Linux system administration, cluster management tools (e.g., Slurm, PBS, or similar), and parallel file systems (e.g., Lustre, GPFS)
- Familiarity with scientific software stacks and research applications
- Experience with networking, storage, and security best practices in HPC environments
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple complex initiatives
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage with technical and non-technical stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
- 5+ years of experience in high-performance computing
- 2+ years of management or technical leadership experience overseeing HPC or large-scale IT infrastructure teams
- Experience in research computing within a university or scientific institution
- Familiarity with cloud-based HPC solutions and hybrid environments
- Knowledge of automation and orchestration tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet)
- Experience with grant proposals or sponsored research support
Anticipated Hiring Range
The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $58,960-$108,035 annually. Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
