This position will provide education, support and safety items to prevent unintentional injuries of children at WVU Medicine Children's. This position will assess the safety and educational needs of children and their families, plan interventions to keep them safe, and implement plans. This position will assist the Program Coordinator in maintaining and disseminating the Injury Prevention and Safety Program at WVU Children's Hospital/Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center and will promote childhood safety and injury prevention through participation in community events.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Bachelor's Degree in health related or social services field;OR Associate's DegreeANDtwo (2) years' experience in child safety education. 2.Valid driver's license. 3. Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) within 90 days of hire. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1.Special Needs Training Certification. CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. Provides services within the mission and vision of Children's Hospital. 2. Assesses the child passenger safety and safe sleep environment following birth or NICU/PICU/6SE/6E stay of infant. Implements safety measures as needed. 3. Inspects car seat. Assesses infant and medical condition, and appropriateness of seat. May need to recommend or provide an appropriate car seat if infant's seat is deemed inappropriate by Specialist due to medical diagnosis, type of seat or condition of seat (expired, dirty, missing parts). 4. Educates on proper use of car seat as per manufacturer, AAP, Safe Kids, and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). May be one on one education, or in a classroom setting. 5. Provides safe sleep education and may provide aplayardif sleep environment is deemed unsafe by Specialist. 6. Positions/assesses infant in car seat for angle tolerance testing as needed. May collaborate with medical team to address concerns if challenge is failed, and provide loaner seat if necessary. 7. Educates caregivers on safety topics: child passenger safety, safe sleep, childproofing of home, and other unintentional injury topics. 8. Follows best practice guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics, Safe Kids, and NHTSA for childhood injury prevention and child passenger safety. 9. Promotes and practices the delivery of high quality, family centered care and services for patients and families. 10. Assesses child and chooses proper loaner restraint (car seat of vest) for child following orthopedic injury or surgery. 11. Responsible for the distribution, tracking of equipment loaned to customers. 12. Assesses the safety needs of child and/or home environment when hospitalized with an unintentional injury and implements safety measures as needed. 13. Develops safety education packets to address most common unintentional childhood injuries, and provide prior to discharge home. 14. Teaches car seat safety or other topics as identified during childbirth education classes or hospital discharge classes. 15. Collaborates with community partners to participate or plan community events and to identify families in the community who need assistance with education or safety items. 16. Serves as an education resource for the community and an expert in injury prevention for WVU Children's hospital. 17. Pursues professional development and maintains competencies. 18. Collects statistical data based upon required templates. 19. Evaluates departmental activities and makes recommendations for improvement. 20. Maintains program expenditures within the budgetary limits. 21. Conducts data and evidence base needs assessment and program evaluations. 22. Utilizes evidenced based injury prevention interventions in interactions with patients and families. Must be Physically able to help families with placing child in restraint, and installation of child restraint in vehicle 3. Working closely with others. 4. Working around infectious disease. 5. May work outside in inclement weather. 6. May work in community setting. 7. Will be required to drive. 8. Overnight stays and weekend work may be required. Mastery of current best practice recommendations guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics, Safe Kids, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for childhood injury prevention and child passenger safety. 2. Training on Safe to Sleep and Period of Purple Crying initiatives. 3. Knowledge of different types of child safety restraints and seat belt systems. 4. Good communication skills to educate parents, caregivers on safety issues, and to collaborate with community members, staff and other departments. 5. Knowledgeable of risk factors for abuse and neglect, recognize warning signs, injuries and coordinate with staff when concerned regarding suspicious injuries, unsafe home environment, report to Child Protective Services as a mandated reporter if necessary. 6. Knowledgeable of specialized restraints including hipspicacar seat, car beds and vests.
