Description

The Melvin Sabshin, M.D. Library & Archives at the American Psychiatric Association Foundation (APAF) is seeking a mission-driven Library & Archives Intern with a strong interest in the history of psychiatry and a desire to gain hands-on experience in a nonprofit medical organization. The intern will primarily assist with the inventory and preservation of the rare books collection. Key responsibilities include cataloging materials, documenting the condition of aging volumes, and rehousing fragile items using custom enclosures or Mylar. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications:



  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program
  • Familiarity with archival theory, principles, and best practices
  • Ability to assess and evaluate rare books for preservation and conservation needs
  • Experience creating descriptive metadata using the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classification system
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)



Applicants must be willing to commit to 20-25 per week with a hybrid schedule: two days in person and one day remote, for a 14-week internship period (approx. May 13 - August 14, 2025).
