The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) invites applications for a full-time Instructor of Biology at its campus in Durham, North Carolina for the NCSSM Connect program. The position is a 10-month, permanent-track position with full benefits through the State of North Carolina.

The NCSSM Extended Learning division - in which the NCSSM Connect program is a part - serves as the outreach arm of the school, collaborating with public schools and communities to provide all students with access to academically rigorous curriculum and experiential learning experiences that supplement and strengthen mathematics, science, computer science, engineering, and humanities teaching and learning through courses, conferences, summer programs, and teacher professional development.

Description of Duties:

The position is a full-time, ten-month faculty appointment in the Extended Learning division at the NCSSM-Durham campus, with full benefits through the state of North Carolina. The position reports to the NCSSM Director of Instructional Leadership for the NCSSM Connect program and is responsible for providing instruction in Biology through the NCSSM Connect program.

The NCSSM Connect program offers live, synchronous virtual courses taught by NCSSM faculty to students in their local high schools across North Carolina. During class, Connect instructors use group activities and cutting-edge instructional technology to facilitate active participation, with project-based learning and cross-site collaboration with students from around the state. Students are able to interact with others from the mountains to the coast. Our NCSSM Connect program allows smaller, rural schools to offer AP and honors-level courses that may otherwise be unavailable.

General duties:

  • Develop and communicate to students clear course objectives and goals;

  • Plan and develop an instructional program that helps students learn specific course content and skills;

  • Regularly monitor and evaluate students' progress, providing them with resources and feedback on their performance;

  • Structure and manage an environment conducive to learning;

  • Model for students responsibility to self and others;

  • Follow the school's mission, policies, and procedures;

  • Visit one or more partner school sites for the NCSSM Connect courses;

  • Teach one January term (two week, 8-day) course for the residential program;

  • Attend Extended Learning departmental, faculty, and staff meetings;

  • Serve on Extended Learning departmental, faculty, and school-wide standing committees;

  • Write recommendations for students each year, as requested;

  • Participate in professional development and personal intellectual growth activities;

Participate in one or more of the following activities:

  • Provide information, service, and expertise to other schools and organizations;

  • Assist students on special projects, independent and individual study;

  • Participate in the selection/admissions reading process for NCSSM residential and online programs;

  • Provide assistance for school-sponsored programs and extracurricular activities;

  • Participate in the implementation of the annual Ethics and Leadership Conference, the annual NC Student Academy of Science, and the annual selection process for Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics;

  • Participate in a celebration day for NCSSM Connect students/scholars;

  • Create and implement an extracurricular, virtual club or enrichment for NCSSM Connect students;

  • Review and revise curriculum and/or create new course offerings pending approval.

This is an in-person instructional role based on the Durham campus, with teaching responsibilities determined annually according to program demand.

Specific duties:

Teach 3 class sections each semester and 2 weeks of a January-term course.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Experience teaching biology and a commitment to engaging gifted and motivated students in online, synchronous and face-to-face (January term for residential program) classrooms. Enthusiasm for student-centered, hands-on lab or field activities and familiarity with educational and laboratory technology. Interest in emphasizing quantitative or computational approaches to science content and incorporating the concepts and techniques of data science. Experience in the use of educational technology to deliver interactive synchronous remote courses.

Courses may include Honors Global Public Health, Honors Diseases: Dynamics of Epidemics, Honors Genetics and Biotechnology, Honors Intro to Neuroscience, and/or Honors Anatomy and Physiology.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master's degree in Biology, other Natural Sciences, or Science Education and at least 2 years of teaching experience.
