Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals

This new project aims to measurably reduce Americans' exposure to harmful endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The project will focus on reducing exposure to the most harmful EDCs in use in the near-term, while laying the foundation for longer-term policy reform to prevent additional harmful EDCs from being introduced. The Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals project is a collaboration between Pew's Environment and Government Performance portfolios.

The Environment Portfolio focuses on science-based, nonpartisan, and sustainable solutions to help protect the planet and people. We work in partnership with governments, Indigenous rights holders, intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, local stakeholders, scientists, and other researchers to advance public policy so that nature and communities can thrive.

The Government Performance portfolio provides the nonpartisan research, solutions, and momentum decisionmakers need to ensure our institutions improve the health of people in the United States and enable them to successfully climb the economic ladder. Those goals are pursued through a wide range of the portfolio's policy-focused projects (with explorations into new areas underway)-from ensuring states' finances are prepared for future volatility, to unlocking gateways to mental health care, to addressing the nation's lack of attainable housing.

Position Overview

The senior manager, state policy, Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals, plays an important role in developing and overseeing the implementation of strategies to achieve project objectives related to the adoption and successful implementation of state policies designed to reduce Americans' exposure to harmful endocrine disrupting chemicals and lay the groundwork for national action in the future.

Reporting to the project director, public policy, the senior manager supervises a team of approximately six staff, develops political strategies and campaign plans for achieving project objectives, manages outreach to government officials and partner organizations, secures bipartisan support for evidence-based policies, maintains a prioritized project plan and timeline of deliverables across their lines of work, and assigns and manages resources as needed.

This position is based in Pew's Washington, D.C., office and will participate in Pew's core in-office days on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will have flexibility to work from home the remainder of each week. This position is contingent upon board approval in June 2025.

Responsibilities

• Foster a work environment that is diverse, equitable, inclusive, accessible, and in line with Pew and the project's related goals.
• Manage and mentor six members of the project, including day-to-day leadership and ongoing professional development.
• Manage the state engagement work to ensure it is on track, meeting deliverables and appropriately resourced.
• Assign resources to team members by determining the appropriate balance between project needs and staff member interest, capacity, and skill.
• Develop and implement effective campaign strategies at the state level.
• Work with contracted policy, advocacy and research partners and ensure that workflow is going smoothly, meeting deliverables, and is within budget.
• Cultivate and maintain detailed knowledge of public policy discussions, regulatory changes, and other relevant changes to policies and practices related to endocrine disrupting chemicals, chemical regulation, chemical oversight.
• Oversee and lead state policy work including the oversight of state selection recommendations in conjunction with government relations and other internal stakeholders.
• Work with Project Director and leadership in adjacent workstreams (i.e. Cross-cutting, Private Sector, and Science teams) to ensure alignment on achievable and measurable goals to reduce exposure to EDCs.
• Develop and implement strategies with the federal policy workstream to ensure that policy engagement on a state and federal level is working in tandem to advance Pew's work in EDC policy.
• Manage internal and external communications around project team's state policy findings and goals, including efforts to promote adoption of new policies and implementation of already enacted policies.
• Manage project budgets and relationships with contractors and grantees. Participate in contract negotiations and grantmaking decision-making.
• Build and maintain collaborative relationships with relevant stakeholders such as government officials, subject matter experts, and nongovernmental organizations.
• Represent the project at conferences, meetings, and other events.
• Oversee and participate in campaigning as needed.
• Participate in activities that support program and Pew-wide objectives.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
• Generally, eight years of applicable experience, including staff, project, and/or consultant management experience.
• Excellent oral, writing, and editing skills. Skilled at informing and influencing internal and external audiences through written and oral communications.
• Expertise working productively with a wide array of stakeholders, both internal and external, and approaching issues with a nonpartisan, politically astute, and objective mindset in a rapidly changing environment.
• Experience designing and implementing political or advocacy campaigns that seek to secure legislation through Congress or state legislatures.
• Strong research and analytical skills applied to public policy issues, including capacity to synthesize and summarize large amounts of information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue.
• Experience managing a team effectively and building collaborative relationships.
• Seasoned judgement and comfort in making decisions, justifying recommendations, and being responsive, clear, and firm with colleagues and partners.
• Effective and results-oriented planner for both short- and long-term programmatic goals and orienting these goals to align with the project team and institution's procedures.

Travel

This position requires frequent domestic travel to meetings and conferences.

The salary range represents a reasonable estimate of the annual salary based on Pew's commitment to provide equitable and market-competitive pay.
