Your Responsibilities as a Catering Supervisor include, but are not limited to:

  • Being "on the floor" for event service on a daily basis
  • Maintaining open and frequent communication with the management team regarding event status, questions, concerns, and new ideas
  • Participating in developing and implementing training programs for front-of-house student staff alongside the Catering Manager and the Associate Director
  • Ensuring timeliness of each event; This includes packing up and departing the kitchen, arrival at the event location, set up, service within the appropriate timeframe, event breakdown
  • Monitoring the quality of the product and service provided during the event
  • Managing a team of student staff for the successful execution of catered events.
  • Leading the students by example and be able to delegate tasks with detailed instruction and context as needed before, during and after events
  • Forming positive working relationships with coworkers, including students, while remaining professional and respectful at all times
  • Serving as a point of contact during events for the event host.
  • Troubleshooting with excellent customer service and taking action quickly
  • Overseeing equipment and workstation clean-up
  • Tracking various inventories
  • Maintaining awareness of workload balance across the department and be willing to assist as needed with atypical tasks
  • Completing industry-recommended certifications such as ServSafe, TIPS, CPR/AED, ALE educational sessions
  • Working with the entire Grandview team on other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

  • Working knowledge of the food & beverage or hospitality industry gained through 2 years of work experience
  • Ability to remain calm and make quick decisions under stressful circumstances
  • Patience to guide and supervise student staff that is new to the workforce
  • Ability to work during weekends and holidays as needed (including shifts that may exceed 8 hours)
  • Ability to hold oneself accountable and can be relied upon to ensure that projects and schedules are maintained
  • Ability to be proactive in completing their assigned tasks and strategize to create task lists to delegate to others
  • Capacity to perform routine or repetitious tasks with care and attention to detail
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to lead and provide support to catering staff
  • Demonstrate a collaborative approach to the completion of tasks or assignments
  • Demonstrated ability to treat other employees, including student staff, with respect
  • Shown versatility in working well under high pressure and fast-paced situations, as well as slower days that require proactivity and the ability to stay organized
  • Excellent customer service and ability to empathize with clients and staff
  • Ability (or willingness to learn) to drive, reverse, and otherwise maneuver a catering vehicle through paved roads, foot traffic paths, and between buildings on campus. Vehicles include a cargo van and box trucks.
  • Interest in learning from all other positions in the department and willingness to help others

  • 2+ years of relative work experience in the food & beverage industry, preferably with high-volume catering
  • Experience leading a team is preferred

Physical Demands of Position

  • Moving and traversing in a constant, fast-paced environment for 8+ hours a day
  • Ability (or willingness to learn) to drive, reverse, and otherwise maneuver a catering vehicle through paved roads, foot traffic paths, and between buildings on campus
  • Lifting and lowering, pushing and pulling items in excess of 40 lbs
  • Stooping and bending to retrieve items from ovens, shelves, trucks, etc.
  • Set up, breakdown and cleaning equipment
  • Pushing and pulling heavy carts, floats, and containers on and off the trucks and up and down elevators

Required Functional Competencies to Successfully Perform Job Duties.
Knowledge-Technical: Ability to follow menu guidelines, standardized recipes, and production sheets. Develops and modifies recipes, with appropriate guidance, as needed. Reads menus correctly to estimate food requirements and procures food from storage. Checks par levels to correctly determine variety and quantity. Understands preparation of large quantities of food and prepares accordingly so as not to over or under-produce. Operates equipment according to guidelines. Checks the finished product for flavor, temperature, appearance, and garnish before serving to customers. Appropriate labels and dates foods in the cooler including leftovers. Organizes kitchen/unit work for the day in a timely manner. Follows health laws in the preparation, holding, and storing of food.

Safety & Health Compliance: Practices good personal hygiene by coming to work clean, no body odor, appropriate hair restraint, clean shaven or beard/mustache no longer than 1/8 inch, no nail polish, jewelry must follow guidelines. Hands washed, sanitary gloves worn/changed, and food handled according to state health laws. Foods to be stored according to state health laws by keeping hot foods above 145 degrees F and cold foods below 45 degrees F with raw meats stored below cooked meats daily. Clean work area maintained by removing dirt/dust/stains, and wiping up spills quickly. Storing and labeling cleaning supplies appropriately.

Customer Service: Responds to requests from fellow employees promptly and courteously. In order to achieve excellent customer service in our units there are positive behaviors that we want to demonstrate such as good eye contact, positive image, as well as friendly and prompt service. There are also behaviors that we do not want to demonstrate such as eating, drinking, reading, excessive talking, cell phone usage, or using tobacco products while not on your scheduled break. Attentive to duties. Routine complaints handled according to guidelines. Information about foods and preparation techniques offered to customers. Correct and precise explanations/directions offered to customers as required.
