Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is seeking a Seasonal Part-Time Helper to support the Geology and Geophysics Department during the Summer 2025 period (May-August). This casual, non-exempt position is ideal for individuals looking to gain hands-on experience in a world-renowned research environment and are eligible for casual benefits.

Under direct supervision, selected candidates will assist with routine laboratory tasks and general clerical responsibilities to support ongoing scientific work. These roles offer a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge oceanographic research while developing foundational lab skills.

The internal working title for this position will be Part-Time Helper.

Additional Job Requirements

Specific Duties To Be Performed (Job Description):

The successful candidate will generate a large training dataset using AI-powered segmentation software to analyze and annotate underwater photographs and accurately identify corals to genus level. The candidate will assist in the development of a protocol for the quantification of coral health status (bleaching and disease). The candidate will apply the new protocol in the image analysis.

Key Responsibilities:

* Analyze underwater photographs of coral reefs using specialized annotation software.

* Label corals by taxonomy (primarily to the genus level) and assess health indicators (e.g., bleaching, disease, physical damage).

* Maintain detailed and organized records of labeled data.

* Collaborate with PI and lab members to ensure labeling quality and consistency.

* Participate in periodic training sessions and quality control checks to refine identification and scoring accuracy.

* Contribute to training of new team members on coral identification and image annotation as necessary.

* Meet project deadlines and productivity targets.

Education Desired:

Currently enrolled in High school - junior or senior

Previous Experience Required:

* Experience with AI-powered segmentation software

* Ability to identify the dominant Pacific corals to genus level

* Demonstrated ability to maintain consistency across large datasets.

* Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
