SUMMARY The Tool Design Engineer is responsible for designing tooling, and machinery in support of new product launches and equipment builds. They also manage the fabrication of that tooling and machinery to include directly machining and assembling tools and equipment. Tooling plays a central role in our success at Kollmorgen and has a high level of visibility in Engineering and Operations. This role actively participates in new product development working closely with a cross-functional development team. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Design of new tooling
- Models, designs, and produces drawings for new tooling using computer aided drafting tools.
- Machines, fabricates, and assembles prototype tooling as needed.
- Provides tooling advice to Design Engineers and Manufacturing Engineers for New Quotations along with accurate cost estimations and schedule timing.
- Attends Design Reviews for new products and working in concert with Design Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering, designs new tooling for prototype and production development stages.
- Selects material and heat treatment necessary for tooling.
- This position owns the responsibility of designing tooling that allows a high level of manufacturing ease and high levels of Quality.
- Works closely with Machinists and other employees that fabricate the tooling and manages the fabrication of the tooling to the schedule.
- Review fabricated tooling
- Participates in verification that the fabricated tooling meets the intended function.
- Works closely with Machinists, Inspection, and others to resolve any issues and clearly makes appropriate document changes.
- Maintains drawings as needed, places them into BOM, and ensures the tooling is located into the proper storage bin location for easy retrieval.
- Monitors and maintains a good method to accurately forecast tooling fabrication time and cost.
- Design parts necessary for plant floor production
- Design jigs, fixtures, and templates for use as work aids in the fabrication of parts or products.
- May assist with production of prototype products.
Critical Competencies
- Knowledge of common machining methods and tools and applicability to tool and die manufacturing.
- Ability to operate manual and CNC lathes, mills, grinders and EDM equipment at a high skill level.
- Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of precision parts, drawings, and models.
- High skill level of 2D drawing required, and high level of 3D modeling preferred.
- High skill level of drafting practices, GD&T and shop machine tolerance capability.
- Must be able to carefully check your work and be accountable for it with a high level of attention to detail.
- Knowledge of mold making, heat treatment, and welding.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, with emphasis on Excel.
- Self-motivated and capable of completing tasks without close supervision and within schedule and planned cost.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Capable of owning the responsibility of delivering the tooling for the Prototype team.
- Critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills to identify alternative and correct solutions.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Associate's degree in Machine Technology (or equivalent) preferred
- BS Mechanical Engineering, BS Mechanical Engineering Technology, or equivalent preferred.
- 3-5 years Tool and Die machining experience preferred
- 1-3 years of related industrial experience
