Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Accurately interviews patients to obtain demographic and financial data.
- Consistently creates the patient medical record used in the treatment of patients
and the collection of their accounts for outpatient, inpatient and emergency room. - Task requires ability to retrieve and input data into computerized registration
system while verbally asking questions and receiving responses. - Visually reviews patient record to verify accuracy of data on pre-registered accounts.
- Must be able to perform registration duties under stressful time constraints.
- Consistently follows hospital/departmental policy in patient's identification and
verification processes. - Accurately identify patients prior to placing armband.
- Consistently obtains patients signature authorizing consent for medical
treatment, assignment of insurance benefits, release of medical record as a
condition for payment of charges and a patient financial responsibility for services
rendered. - Determines appropriate use of promissory note per departmental
policy. - Acts as witness for patient's signature.
- Appropriately refers to financial
counselors per hospital policy. - Consistently documents appropriate fields in HIS to ensure 100% compliance.
- Consistently distributes to patients a booklet informing patients about making
decisions about their medical care in accordance with the Patient Self
Determination Act (42 V.S.V., Sections 1395 and 1396 (a) (A), and
requirements of the District of Columbia law. - Consistently documents in the
medical record the patient's receipt of "Message from Medicare" and the
existence of an advance directive per hospital policy. - Consistently explains admission policies and procedures to patients, families,
physicians, and hospital staff. - Deals discreetly with sensitive, confidential information concerning professional
and personal information about staff and hospital programs/operations.
Other Duties & Responsibilities:
- Deals discretely with sensitive, confidential patient information in accordance with hospital policy.
- Performs point of care testing using the I-STAT system on patients requiring CT or MRI contrast exams or other tasks appropriate for the particular Imaging care setting.
- Maintains a clean, orderly, quiet environment within the department with special attention to assigned workstation and associated waiting rooms.
- Prepares/starts IV lines according to hospital/department policy and procedures.
- Attends department and clerical staff meetings and participates in oral discussions.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Accesses patient files in hospital information system (HIS) via CRT, keyboard. Enters appropriate exam information in order to generate a requisition.
- Prints appropriate forms from HIS or computer. Enters appropriate data into HIS in order to track external films, locate films within the department and hospital, log in and log out patients.
- Facilitates work flow by moving film jackets and unread films to file room to be read or other appropriate workstation.
Minimum Requirements:
- Medical setting experience desired.
- General knowledge of Radiology exams and/or anatomy desired.
Skills, Abilities & Attitude:
- Must be able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with patients, visitors, co-workers, and physicians.
- Demonstrates good critical thinking in assessing situations and executing appropriate interventions to achieve problem resolution. Able to use department telephone/PA system to communicate with employees and hospital staff.
- Must be able to use a computer/CRT.
- Demonstrates courtesy, respect, and professionalism in the interaction with patient, visitors, co-workers, and physicians.
- Able to adjust personal schedule to meet the needs of the department.
- Able to present a cheerful, pleasant manner at all times, and to remain calm during stressful situations.
- Works cooperatively with all the staff of the Out Patient Center.
- Ability to use judgment to establish priorities.
- Ability to modify care according to the patient's age. Patient assistant deals primarily with adults and geriatric patients.

Salary Range: Minimum $18.29/hour - Maximum $30.18/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.
