Purpose

As a member of the Information Technology Group within the Cockrell School of Engineering, actively support a fleet of 100+ AV Systems, 60% of which are classrooms. Collaboratively design and physically build classroom AV systems and provide outstanding customer support during events.

Responsibilities
  • Proficient in using hand and power tools, including soldering irons, crimpers, multimeters, signal generators, and testers. Ability to work independently or as part of a team to troubleshoot and assist with the commissioning of AV systems, ranging from simple to complex setups. Skilled in using industry-standard computer applications for project management, ensuring timely and effective execution of tasks. Engage with customers to understand their specific needs and design tailored AV solutions for various venues. Organize and manage customer billing, invoicing, and payment processes.

  • Actively participate in preparing classrooms for the school day, including responding quickly to hotline calls, as part of a collaborative team with students and staff. Provide rapid technical support in classrooms and AV venues for faculty, staff, and VIPs, troubleshooting and resolving issues under tight time constraints. Create training materials and user guides for end users.

  • Construct, install, and maintain AV systems to ensure optimal performance, including cabling, controls, and displays. Read and interpret AV system drawings and specifications to implement designs effectively. Assist in creating and refining technical standards, processes, and procedures for AV systems. Perform commissioning and acceptance testing on AV systems, ensuring everything functions as expected. Troubleshoot and resolve any issues that arise during testing. Integrate AV systems and controls to provide automated health checks, ensuring the continuous health and performance of the systems.

  • Train customers and support staff on operating AV equipment, video conferencing tools, and best practices. Assist in maintaining accurate inventory records for AV equipment, including assets deployed in classrooms, laboratories, event spaces, and other facilities, as well as keeping track of spare parts. Develop and maintain documentation, both print and online, to support AV operations, training, and troubleshooting. Support the installation, maintenance, and replacement of AV equipment, including climbing ladders, running cables, and mounting projectors or monitors.

  • Pursue professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices and advancements in AV and IT technology.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor or on-site leader.

Required Qualifications
  • Expert-level knowledge of electronic equipment and computer hardware/software, including projectors, document cameras, audiovisual switchers, Windows and macOS systems, video conferencing systems, and network devices.

  • At least 1 year of experience with installation and maintenance of AV systems, including video/audio conferencing, distributed audio, digital signage, sound reinforcement, and control systems.

  • At least 1 year of experience in installing and maintaining AV equipment.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with AV installation best practices, including equipment rack design, cable management, and terminating various audio/video connectors (e.g., RJ45, D-sub, HDMI). Ability to use both manual and powered tools.

  • Understanding of computer networking and troubleshooting, particularly for AV and hybrid video teleconferencing systems.

  • Familiarity with all types of AV equipment, including set-up, operation, troubleshooting, and explanation of system functions.

  • Experience fabricating AV racks, mounting equipment and displays, and installing structured cabling (e.g., cat5e/6, audio cables).

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, customers, and vendors with varying levels of technical knowledge.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to respond to client needs promptly and courteously.

  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs independently, and up to 100 lbs with assistance. Comfortable working on ladders and at heights, adhering to all safety protocols.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, taking direction from supervisors or on-site leaders.

  • Strong ability to prioritize tasks in a high-pressure environment while maintaining professionalism and meeting deadlines.

  • High attention to detail, excellent time management, and the ability to multi-task efficiently.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Crestron programming, including in-depth knowledge of Crestron products and control systems. Certification or formal training in Crestron control system programming is a plus.

  • Proven ability to lead and mentor a team, including coaching and guiding technicians (especially students) in troubleshooting basic AV issues.

  • Strong understanding of networking protocols, including configuring static IP addresses and ensuring the smooth operation of networked devices on local networks (LAN) and through VPN tunnels.

  • Proficient in computer networking and advanced IT systems, with a solid foundation in troubleshooting network-related AV challenges.

  • Experience with home theater, network installations, or low voltage systems, as well as factory-service training or certification on major AV brands and projectors.

  • Ability to read and understand architectural, electrical, structural, and AV system drawings for accurate system installation and integration.

  • Skilled in using test and calibration equipment to ensure optimal system performance and accurate troubleshooting.

  • Experience in designing and configuring control systems, particularly with Crestron or similar platforms.

  • Proficient in uploading, downloading, and managing software on embedded systems to ensure proper configuration and functionality.

  • Ability to diagnose and test complex system problems

Salary Range

$62,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions
  • Will lift, climb ladders and use power tools daily, frequent bending, pushing/pulling gear, and lifting up to 50 lbs.

  • Use of manual dexterity

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation

Work Shift
  • Standard work schedule is Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
