Requirements

Georgetown University's Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of Georgetown University Medical Center, seeks to prevent, treat, and cure cancers by linking scientific discovery, expert and compassionate patient care, quality education and partnership with the community - guided by the principle of cura personalis, "care for the whole person." Georgetown Lombardi is the research engine driving clinical cancer research at MedStar Health in the D.C. Metro area and Hackensack Meridian Health in northern New Jersey.

The Tissue Coordinator provides skilled medical technology and clinical research capabilities to support the scope of the pathology, biobanking, histology services, and research related functions and goals of the Clinical Research Management Office (CRMO) in the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC). They are responsible for all aspects of collection, storage, and shipment of tissue samples collected for clinical trials conducted in LCCC CRMO. Performing all duties in accordance with applicable laws and regulations and adhering to Georgetown University Medical Center's philosophies, policies, and SOPs., the incumbent works in compliance with Human Subject Protection, patient confidentiality/HIPAA, and GCP, and has daily duties that include, but are not limited to:
  • Collect research samples from clinical areas, reviewing, understanding, and following all protocol and sponsor requirements and instructions related to specimen handling and processing, including the implementation of protocol modifications.
  • Store and/or ship samples to various lab facilities in accordance with protocol requirements, collecting and organizing tissue sample related source documents in electronic and paper format according to site policies.
  • Update the CRMO Tissue Biopsy Calendar, including real-time biopsy collection and processing requests, along with archival tissue requests, making note of any special processing or procedures, including but not limited to, special markers/staining requests and shipment information.
  • Clean and organize the tissue processing area at the beginning of each day, before handoff, and before leaving at the end of the day
  • Process the specimens in accordance with the specific instructions provided and defined in the protocol and/or protocol-specific laboratory manual, ensuing appropriate timeliness of specimen processing according to protocol and/or protocol-specific laboratory manual.
  • Follow the shipping process provided in the protocol and/or protocol-specific laboratory manual, temporarily storing specimens in the refrigerator or freezer on site prior to shipping.
  • Ensure requisition forms are completed legibly and fully, as outlined in the protocol and/or protocol-specific laboratory manual
  • Keep a Tissue Processing Log to track the research tissue requests for each week, assuring ongoing compliance with all departmental, institutional, and federal requirements and regulations.
  • Maintain controls to assure accuracy, completeness, and confidentiality of research data, as well as confidentiality standards for all potential and enrolled study participants.
  • Comply with federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations, participating in SIVs and COVs or any other monitoring visits as needed.

  • With Pharmaceutical Sponsors, Auditors, and Study Monitors


Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum of two (2) years laboratory or clinical experience, preferably with prior interaction with patients, knowledge of medical terminology, and familiarity with human subjects' research regulations
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including PowerPoint, image processing in PowerPoint and Photoshop, spreadsheet applications, and file and database maintenance
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to remain organized, demonstrate initiative, and problem solve with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and function within a team
  • Reliable and able to prioritize competing responsibilities
  • Knowledge of anatomy and histology

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$18.28 - $27.33

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
