The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), established in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project, is a leading U.S. research facility renowned for its contributions to nuclear science and technology. Initially focused on nuclear weapons development, ORNL now conducts extensive research in reactor design, nuclear materials, and advanced nuclear energy solutions. It operates several research reactors and engages in efforts related to nuclear nonproliferation, medical isotope production, and innovative industrial applications. Through collaboration with various partners, ORNL continues to advance next-generation nuclear technologies and address safety and security challenges in the nuclear field.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:

Job duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Contribute to research and development projects in areas such as Nuclear Fuels, Nuclear Criticality Safety, Isotope Production, and Enrichment Science and Engineering, Irradiation Engineering, Advanced Nuclear Materials, Reactor Modeling and Simulation.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to successfully implement and determine the feasibility of ambitious nuclear projects.
  • Interact effectively across organization structures with staff scientists and engineers and be an effective representative of ORNL and their research to sponsors and the professional community.
  • Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace - in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

A BS or MS degree in nuclear engineering, engineering sciences or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proven ability to work effectively both independently and in a team setting.
  • Prior experience contributing to world-class research and development projects.
  • Experience, knowledge or training in one or more of the following areas is preferred:
    • Nuclear fuel cycles.
    • Isotope production.
    • Nuclear reactor modeling.
    • Irradiation engineering.
    • Nuclear criticality safety.
    • Advanced nuclear materials and their applications.
    • International trade outreach and material security.
    • High-performance computing (HPC) methods for nuclear applications.
    • Standard design software (e.g., SCALE, VERA, MCNP, Serpent, Cyclus) and reactor systems and concepts.

Special Requirement:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
