Position Highlights |
The Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep medicine within the Department of Medicine is seeking English/Spanish bilingual applicants for an on-call Research Nurse II to be responsible for coordinating and executing research protocols and treatment plans for the ESSENTIAL research trial. This role involves overseeing participant recruitment, safety monitoring, data collection, and regulatory compliance while ensuring adherence to study-specific protocol guidelines. The Research Nurse II provides direct nursing care for adult and pediatric participants, which includes conducting health assessments, ECG testing, blood draws and collection of other biological specimens, and administrating medications to pediatric participants. This position utilizes electronic medical record platforms to screen and recruit research participants. This position prepares and maintains regulatory documentation including submissions to local and external IRBs. The Research Nurse II works under limited supervision, exercising independent judgment in problem-solving and providing guidance to lower-level staff. Duties & Responsibilities |
Provide Direct Patient Care
- Coordinate and/or perform physical assessments, administer medications, and order and coordinate additional lab tests and other protocol required procedures.
- Perform peripheral blood sampling as required by clinical trial protocols, and work with the internal laboratory team to ensure samples are processed appropriately.
- Ensure patient safety by assessing and documenting adverse events and documenting concomitant medications.
- Provide patient education regarding study drug dosing, adverse events, and supportive care.
- Support Principal Investigator/treating physicians with protocol adherence regarding study medication dosing calculations, toxicity management, supportive care, and communication with study sponsors about clinical issues.
Maintain communication with participants & collect appropriate data.
- Communicate regularly with participants to assess and monitor adverse events, providing clinical guidance, and ensuring appropriate follow-up based on protocol requirements.
- Communicate regularly with physicians and Principal Investigators to implement and adjust supportive care based on participant response and clinical findings.
- Collect, analyze, and document clinical and patient data from participants and their assigned therapy equipment, ensuring accuracy, regulatory compliance, and integration into study protocols.
Act as primary Clinical Research Nurse for Adult & Pediatric Clinical Trials.
- Plan, coordinate, and evaluate nursing care of clinical trial participants on IRB approved clinical trial protocols.
- Perform procedures that require a nursing license, within the guidelines of University of Arizona policy.
- Work with the clinical research team, Clinical Research Coordinators, and Principal Investigators to create plans to confirm proper execution of clinical trial procedures.
- Participate in protocol development by reviewing potential protocols and evaluating their effect on standard nursing procedures.
- Prepare for and attend Site Evaluation Visits and Site Initiation Visits from study sponsors.
Participate in training.
- Develop SOP's and training guidelines for clinical trials that align with the trial's IRB approved protocol.
- Develop and provide educational material and training to participants and their family members.
- Participate in the training of Clinical Research Coordinators and attend staff and clinical trial sponsor meetings.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of principles, theories and concepts of the Research Nurse II job functions with a strong background in human subject research.
- Ability to communicate effectively through both written reports and verbal presentations.
- Knowledge of preparing initial study submissions, amendments and annual reports to regulatory offices such as the IRB.
- Work experience with pediatric patients.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience.
- Minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Must have current RN licensure in the State of Arizona.
- Graduated from an accredited nursing program.
- Bilingual in Spanish and English.
