Job Summary

Delivers nursing care responsibly and accountable as described professionally by the American Nurses Association (ANA) and legally by the State of Michigan. Demonstrates competency through the critical thinking model known as the nursing process. The charge nurse is a role that a nurse assumes on a shift-by-shift basis and the nurse will not typically be in charge for their full FTE. As such, all responsibilities, requirements and essential functions of the staff nurse role within their unit/department apply to them in the charge nurse role.

Essential Functions
  • The charge nurse is an informal member of the leadership team and serves as the person in charge during their shift. They help assign patients, resolve patient concerns, and direct the flow of work. Charge nurses are not in charge 100% of their FTE. As such, all duties of the staff nurse within their unit/department are also functions of their role (see parent job description for essential functions of the staff nurse role).
  • Demonstrates a high standard of moral, ethical, and culturally sensitive behavior. Formulates decisions and actions based on ethical principles, using the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses to guide practice. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, staff and organizational data.
  • Actively participates on the unit shared governance council, functions as a preceptor, and actively participates in otherprojects within the unit such as process improvement projects.
  • The charge nurse helps facilitate standard work and is a resource during staff work related exposures, job related injuries, fall events, appropriate safety behaviors, etc.
  • Has awareness of regulatory requirements within the unit including Joint Commission, CMS, Fire Marshall, and other similar standards.
  • Creates assignments using RBC principles, facilitates the MDI huddles, coordinates and ensures breaks for staff.
  • Responds to emergent situations including, but not limited to, Stroke, Sepsis, De-escalation team and activates resources.
  • Partners with Hospital Supervisors as the needs arise.
  • Engages in activities related to the professional role and seeks to continually advance knowledge and competence related to nursing practice while completing self and peer evaluation of nursing practice.
  • Actively participates in safety initiatives and risk mitigating measures where appropriate and completes all position and unit safety related competencies and requirements on a timely basis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required

  • Associate's degree or equivalent,
  • Successful completion of a competency-based orientation program.
  • Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) license upon hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association or ARC American Red Cross within 90 days.
  • Adv Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) within 90 days
  • Pediatric Adv Life Support (PALS), American Heart Association (AHA) within 180 days

Preferred

  • Respiratory Therapist Registry - NBRC, National Board for Respiratory Care within 90 days
