Position Description
Performs assigned duties while serving in a university department for a specified length of time to gain practical experience during graduate or undergraduate level studies. Responsible for developing a practical knowledge and understanding of departmental functions in addition to developing and refining methods necessary to carry assigned work to completion. Work is performs under general supervision of management level personnel and is evaluated on the basis of the completion of assigned tasks.

Major/Essential Functions
The School of Medicine student summer research program is an 8-week program designed to help first-year medical students in Lubbock gain experience in an area of research interest. Students are required to present information regarding summer research activities during the Student Research Week the following spring. The research activities of this program are expected to provide meaningful experience and knowledge that contribute to the student's medical education.
  • Students are expected to attend scheduled lectures provided by The Clinical Research Institute, early this summer. These provide information about:
  • Searching literature
  • Roles and responsibilities of the research team and governing regulations
  • Protection of subjects (consents)
  • Data collection (from charts)
  • Role of the IRB (risks & benefits)
  • Study monitoring and dealing with audits

Additional presentations will be offered throughout the summer on:
  • Developing a hypothesis
  • How to give a presentation and writing an abstract
Research related projects or assigned by mentor and student will perform assigned duties while serving in a University department for a specified length of time to gain practical experience during graduate or undergraduate level studies. Work is performed under general supervision of management level personnel and is evaluated on the basis of the completion of assigned tasks. Student will be responsible for for the following:
  • Developing a practical knowledge and understanding of departmental functions
  • Developing and refining methods necessary to carry assigned work to completion


Required Qualifications
Education and Experience * Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in a related field at an institution of higher education.
