About the Job

Job Responsibilities

  • Create a research curriculum for the 8-week program, including all supply lists, lesson plans, homework, and daily materials
  • Create an environment in which students feel both challenged by the internship (trying to make it not feel like school) but supported throughout the process
  • Design and implement activities that scaffold the necessary laboratory skills and content for the project
  • Set up laboratory materials and maintain a safe laboratory environment
  • Assist students with finding and using scholarly articles to write a research question
  • Advise students as they select their variable and carry out their project
  • Teach students how to analyze and present their data (historically we have used Data Classroom to support this)
  • Assign students at-home work as needed to complete the research project
  • Help students design a research poster and practice presenting it
  • Attend the Summer Undergraduate Research Exposition on August 7th
  • Attend some of the other sessions and networking that support the research project
  • Weekly meetings to train and prepare an undergraduate lab assistant to support in lab

Your Hours:

25-40 hours/week, working no more than 67 days total:

  • 8+ hours/week teaching students in lab
  • 3+ hours per week leading & assisting with research-related workshops outside of lab, for example when UMN librarians teach students how to use PubMed to find articles
  • 10+ hours/week of prep & planning, setting homework assignments and schedule, reviewing drafts, etc.
  • 2+ hours per week meeting with the undergraduate lab assistant to prepare them for their role in lab
  • 1+ hour per week meeting with all high school staff to debrief and coordinate (outside of program hours)
  • 1+ hour per week meeting with wider M-ASCEND staff
Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.

  • BA/BS in Biology, Chemistry or a related field
  • Licensed MN high school teacher
  • 1+ years teaching high school science
  • Demonstrated experience in, and an ongoing commitment to, working effectively with and providing education to youth from backgrounds and identities that are underrepresented within the cancer research workforce
About the Department

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota was created more than 50 years ago in response to a legislative mandate to train primary care physicians. Since then, we have been leaders in transforming the specialty through education, research, and patient care. We are the academic sponsor of seven family medicine residencies-five in the Twin Cities, two in Greater Minnesota. We are involved in medical student education activities across the Medical School's two campuses: Twin Cities and Duluth. We sponsor five fellowship programs-sports medicine, hospice and palliative medicine, behavioral medicine, clinical informatics, and human sexuality- and offer continuing medical education opportunities. Pay and Benefits

Pay Rate: $31.00 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
